What type of water do I use to prepare formula?
« on: May 01, 2006, 16:59:24 pm »
Hi,

I exclusively breastfed my little girl until she was 6 months old. Now, I have started supplementing with some formula and am totally confused!! Do I need to boil bottled spring water? We used Deer Park water. I would think that bottled spring water is healthier than the tap water since you never know what is in your tap. In the tap water of Washington DC last year they found some lead. Horrible. So, we figured using our bottled water was best for the little one just in case.  Do I have to boil it though???????????? The bottled water is room temperature.

Also, for all the moms who give a bottle to baby at night do you burp baby after the bottle? Does the baby go right back to sleep? I think I will keep breast feeding my lo at night for at least another month until she's completely transitioned to formula and I'm sure that her tummy is fine with it, but am confused on bottle feeding at night.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

As it's been explained to me, spring water and other bottled waters are very similar to tap water - it's just that they are "tapped" at a different location.  But, it can have the same problems as tap water.  Now, these are my naturalistic, co-op buying, hybrid driving friends that tell me this, so it could be a bit of an alarmist position.  However, I buy distilled water and use that for my LOs bottles.  Since she's 6MO she needs flouride and my ped gave me a perscription for a flouride vitamin to add to her water (our tap isn't flouridated either).  There is a product called Nursery Water that is distilled and has flouride added, but it can be like $2 a gallon.

I would call your pediatrician and get clarity from him - on the bottled v. distilled water and on the flouride item as well.

Well I use tap water.  It goes through my Brita and then I boil it.

Thanks everyone for your input. I called my ped. and they said I could use tap or bottled and did not need to boil it (unless there was a problem with the tap water).  they said I could buy flourinated water but did not have to.  So, in the end I think we moms must follow our gut instinct with all the info. out there.

Thanks again!!! ;D
