11 month old changing routine? (Long...Sorry!)
« on: May 03, 2006, 13:47:57 pm »
Hello.  For the past few nights my 11 month old does not want to settle to sleep.  Instead plays in his crib, throwing toys out, talking sometimes yelling out, standing, stomping around for a good 30-45 minutes before he finally falls asleep.  Sometimes I have to go in to put his toys back in and try to settle him.  I have no problem with possibly moving his bedtime later, however we have tried that and he will still play and stay up EVEN LATER.  The kicker is that now he is waking up earlier than normal.

Here is the routine he was on, up until the past week or so...

6:30AM-Wake and play in crib
7:00AM-Bottle
8:00AM-Breakfast
9:15AM-Nap (45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours)
Noon-Lunch
1:30-Nap (45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours)
4:00PM-snack
5:00PM-Dinner
6:30PM-Bath, Bottle, Bed by 7PM
Usually asleep by 7:15PM

Now he is not asleep till 8PM sometimes later, and he is awake by 6AM.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Or am I overreacting, which I tend to do! :-[

A few questions before I answer:
Has he recently learned to cruise or could he be on the verge of walking?
What is his temperment?  If you don't know, the quizzes are located in the EASY forum.

It really could be a phase that will pass, or it's his sign of needing a little less day sleep (that is if both of his naps were to be 1.5 hrs each).  Have you tried or are his windows darkened?

Hi HeatherC,

Thanks so much for responding.

He is textbook/spirited.  He has been cruising for about 2 months and definitely on the verge of walking.  Takes 2-3 steps to get to stuff but not actually walking around.

He normally naps a total of 2-2 1/2 hours a day.  Not quite 1 1/2 hours each nap (I wish!!!)

Last night dh kept him up a while longer and he went RIGHT TO SLEEP at 7:30PM till 6:30AM??  Not sure if it was just a fluke?

It's not necessarily a fluke, nor are you overreacting.  When some big milestone is around the corner, babies tend to go bonkers with their routines.  My dd went through a stage of never falling asleep for her pm nap.  you just have to work around it and find areas that might need tweaking to bring the routine back around.  Just observe a bit longer and see if he gives you any clues, but it will probably just work itself out.  There's not always a sound answer and we sometimes just have to roll with it.  One thing to consider is if he is getting enough activity/exercise during the day to work the wiggles out.
