Is this a normal EASY schedule for a 7 week old?
« on: May 03, 2006, 16:10:51 pm »
I've had alot of issues with my 7 week old (reflux & allergic reactions to formula) so I know he's not going to have a great schedule since it's only been 1 1/2 weeks since we started the new medication and new formula.  He's doing great and goes down pretty easy after his activity time.  I'm wondering if I'm on the right track (when will that middle of the night - 100amish-300amish - feed end?) and if there's anything different any of you think I should be doing.

E 600am
E 900am
E 1200pm
E 300pm
E 445pm (woke out of sleep with obvious hunger cry & took normal amount of formula for a feed)
E 700pm
E 900pm (no activity after this feed)
DF 1100pm (usually only a few ounces)
E 130am (no activity)
E 500am (no activity)

Thanks!  Allison in Victoria, British Columbia

What are his nap times and lengths?  Have you considered combing the 9 and 11 pm feeds into one feed at 10?  Or does he wake for both?

He did wake that night at 900pm for the bottle --- I was hoping he would last until 1000pm!  He took an ounce more at three feeds during the day yesterday --- which is what we want, right?  Here's what happened the next day (yesterday - this morning) :

E 500am
E 800am
E 1100am
E 200pm
E 400pm (obvious hunger cry again!  Would NOT nap, cried in stroller during walk too)
E 615pm (woke w/ hunger cry would NOT nap, fell asleep in vibrating chair from 800-815pm & woke with hunger scream)
E 815pm (went down to sleep at around 900pm)
DF 1045pm ( 2 1/2 oz. of formula)
E 230am
E 600am

From 4:00 on when he's crying and won't nap, is he overtired?  How are his naps during the first part of the day?  What times and for how long?  What is his intake with each bottle?

I tried putting him in his crib and did the shush/pat thing, which usually works, but he was just wide awake and would not go down, even though the room was dark and all.  I think I tried him on my chest with a light blanket over his head to make it darker too.  I finally tried the stoller thinking it'd put him to sleep and I'd get some exercise!  He definitley goes down easier for naps in the morning.  I'll put the quantities beside the feed times.

E 600am (4oz)
E 900am (4oz)
E 1200pm (4oz)
E 300pm (4.5oz)
E 445pm (woke out of sleep with obvious hunger cry & took normal amount of formula for a feed) (3oz.)
E 700pm (4oz)
E 900pm (no activity after this feed) (3.25oz)
DF 1100pm (usually only a few ounces) (1.5oz)
E 130am (no activity) (4oz)
E 500am (no activity) (4oz)
E 500am (4oz)
E 800am (5.5oz)
E 1100am (5oz)
E 200pm (5oz)
E 400pm (obvious hunger cry again!  Would NOT nap, cried in stroller during walk too) (4oz)
E 615pm (woke w/ hunger cry would NOT nap, fell asleep in vibrating chair from 800-815pm & woke with hunger scream) (4oz)
E 815pm (went down to sleep at around 900pm) (3oz)
DF 1045pm ( 2 1/2 oz. of formula) (2.5oz)
E 230am (4oz)
E 600am (5oz)

E 1200pm (4.5oz)

Looks like the feedings are just fine.  He may not need the df since he's only taking a small amount, but if he's waking for it you can either give him a feeding or try resettling him.
As for the fussy evenings, it is completely normal for the first 3 months.  Babies tend to say "I've had enough" by the end of the day and are ready to just shut down.  The only other thing I could do to help you would be to help with his naps, but I need to know what times he naps and for how long.

Thanks for the advice!  Much appreciated!  Yesterday afternoon I really persisted with the naptime and did the shush/pat for at least 15 minutes and he slept for 45 minutes between the cluster feed.  I do have one more question though ...

Yesterday afternoon LO fed at 300pm (4oz), 500pm (4oz - woke up w/ hunger cry) & 700pm (5oz - woke w/ hunger cry).  I didn't know what to do after this .... do I feed him in another two hours, but that's a 3rd cluster feed, or just see how long he goes, since it's now "bedtime" and DF at 1000pm (which is 3 hours later, which he'd probably wake up at anyways)??  I decided to feed him at 915pm and he took 3oz and then he took the DF, of 2.5oz, at 1115pm.  He then woke, at 300am and took 5oz.  I wonder what would've happened if I didn't feed him at 915pm?  I'm thinking he would've woken anyway??  From what I gather from the book, it's more important to be consistent with the DF. ??  Thanks again for your help, this new Mum needs it!
