Not ready to sleep through the night????
« on: May 06, 2006, 03:50:51 am »
My ds is 15 weeks old soon to be 16 weeks.  He still wakes up at night around 3-4am sometimes for a feeding and sometimes just because.
Is it possible that some babies are just not ready to sleep through the night?  I've been dream feeding hoping that he will sleep through the night but so far that hasn't happen.  We are currently on a 3 hour EASY and I don't cluster feed as he won't take the extra feed.
Is it normal at his age to still wake up at night??  Will my lo eventually sleep through the night on his own or do I have to help him with that?

It is totally normal for babies this age to wake for a feed. I think more babies wake then sleep through. I do a df and I found at that age my dd had 2 nws without the df. You may want to try it to see if it helps. Also, has he shown signs of being ready to go to 4 hour easy? You may be able to adjust some feeds to 4 hour, keep some at 3 (do a gradual change to 4 hour). My dd started sleeping through some nights at 19 weeks, hit and miss though I did nothing to encourage sleeping through (I bf so I feed when there is a nw). She's now almost 24 weeks and seems to no longer nw. Instead she likes to rise and shine at 5:45am now but that's another challenge we're dealing with ;D.

I'm sorry to say this......I'd rather deal with the night wakings than waking up before the sun rises  :P  I'm not a morning person so I guess I'll just accept the night wakings. ;)

I was going to start transitioning to the 4 hour EASY but I don't think my ds is ready for the change.  We are currently having 45 min nap issues and so far he seems to be hungry at the 3 hour mark.  I don't think he'd last another hour.  But I'm going to wait a little longer before I start transitioning.

Thanks for your reply.

Yep, I said hit and miss... my dd woke at 3am last night and I fed her, she then slept until 7 for her next feed ;D. You are sooo right about rather doing a night wake than the early wake! I had a total of more sleep last night with the nw. For the 4 hour easy, some try to push the 4 hour but you're right to take his cue and switch when he's good and ready, making it a gradual transition. He'll show you when he's ready.

At that age Bram was still getting up for a feed about that time.  Then he started going until at least 5 but last night woke at 3:15 and wanted to eat.  If he is giving us hungry signals we feed him.

When it comes to the 4 hour EASY you can do it gradually.  You could try to do about 15 minutes longer for a few days at a time.  Sometimes 45 minute naps can mean it is time to go from 3 to 4 hours.
