How do you tell if your lo is ready to transition?
« on: May 06, 2006, 04:17:54 am »
In the book BW SAYP, Tracy suggests transitioning to the 4 hour EASY when your lo is 4+ months.  How do you tell if your lo is ready for the transition?  Or do you just go ahead with transition and tweak it as your go along?  I've been loosely following the schedule on page 230 but it seems like that my lo isn't ready to have his feeds and "A" time extended by 15 mins.  Is this a normal reaction when you start to transition?

Also, my lo was born 3 weeks early, does this make a difference with the transition?  Should I wake a few more weeks before I transition?

I moved my DD to 3.5 EASY when she was 4 1/2 months till she was 6 months and could stay awake for 1hr 45 mins -2hrs, and then sleep for 2hrs.

I did, as my DD was born 3 weeks early.

Could you post your current routine.

Here's a link to a post that might help you.  I also waited until dd could naturally sleep longer and stay awake longer, and that was between 5-6 months.

I think I may try moving to a 3.5 hour EASY.  Trevor hasn't been able to stay up for all the the extra 15 mins in "A" time and but is able (somtimes) to wait an extra 15 min for his bottle.

Currently this is what our 3 hour EASY schedule looks like (we use to start at 8am):

7:30am    Eat
8:00am    Activity
9:00am    Sleep
10:30am  Eat
11:00am  Activity
12:00pm  Sleep
1:30pm    Eat
2:00pm    Activity
3:00pm    Sleep
4:30pm    Eat
5:00pm    Activity
7:30pm    Sleep
10-10:30pm  Dreamfeed
3am         Wakes up sometimes for bottle sometimes just because

I did try to extend the "A" time and feedings by 15 mins this past week but my lo sometimes isn't able to naturally stay up during the "A" time or is unable to wait for his bottle.

If I go with a 3.5 hour EASY, how long should the "A" times and nap times be?  How many naps should there be in a day?

i
How do you tell if your lo is ready for the transition?

Well i changed DS to a 4hr routine at 12 weeks, 'cause first he wasn't hungry at the 3hr mark and second his naps started to collapse, so one day i just changed it cold turkey and he was a bit grumpy the first days with the extended A time, but he was hungry at the 4hr mark, and everything fell into place.

With my DD on a 3.5 EASY A time was 1hr 30mins - 1hr 45min and nap the remainder.

She was on 3 naps a day.

When Anna Krisztina starts to consistently have strange naps (waking up too early, waking up too late) and she gets way too whiny, it means to us that her routine needs changes.

I do agree with the others that maybe your LO won't stay awake the 3 hours... you should do the increments little by little and see how your LO reacts. If you feel that your LO isn't ready to stay up for longer periods of time, give him more time and try again in a few days or weeks.

Thanks for the replies.  I'm still going to try to slowly increase the A times.  Hopefully he will be able to stay awake eventually.
