Help? Not interested in the day? hungry at night?
« on: May 06, 2006, 08:01:59 am »
my lo is 15 weeks old but he was born at 42 weeks and weighed over 10 1lbs.  he now weighs over 17 lbs and so you can see weight gain has never been a problem and neither was feeding him - he latched on immediately and gulps it down very fast.

However I started EASY six days ago, and now he seems to have lost interest in feeding.  He keeps latching on and off and grinning up at me! His feed time has now reduced to about 10 mins total!

He is also waking in the night still - despite EASY - and sorry to admit this - but I just dont know whether he is hungry or not! The only way I know if he is hungry is when he roots but as i am no longer picking him up at night as I can shush/pat him back to sleep I dont know.  I presume that as I can get him back to sleep that he cant be hungry!?

Why does he seem to have lost interest?

Why is he hardly feeding in the day?

Is he hungry at night?

If he is hungry at night - how do i get him to feed more in the day?

I currently feed him every 4 hours in the day with a dream feed at 11pm of 6 oz (out of bottle - sometimes breast sometimes formula as I mix feed)

If you are able to get your lo back to sleep with pat/shush at night then he might not be hungry.  He is either waking habitually or he is unable to get himself back to sleep.

As for day time feeds.  As our lo's get older they do get a lot quicker at feeds.  If he seems content after a good 10 minute feed then maybe he has already drained the breast and is satisfied.  He sounds like he is a big boy already and can therefore last longer between feeds.

Sometimes EASY can take a little while for everyone to adjust too.  Give it a few more days and the problems might start to iron themselves out.

Our lo went on 3 hour EASY at 7 weeks and 4 hour about 5 weeks ago.  The reason I went to 4 hours was because he was doing what yours was - bopping off and on and grinning and talking to me.  Alas, after a few weeks on 4 hours, he was doing the same thing after only 10 or 12 minutes!  I realized, just as Carter's Mama suggested, that he is just eating more efficiently!
Right around starting 4 hour EASY, his naps went down the tubes for a while.  I just persisted with trying to extend them and trying to keep him up a little longer for A time and finally over the past 3 days he is able to go to sleep easily again and transition through on his own to have a longer nap.  We went through about 4 weeks in all of April with him waking about 45 minutes into his night time sleep and I'm sure it was due to the crummy naps as well.  As soon as his naps started to improve, this started to stop.  He still makes noise once in a while after 45 min but if we leave him he'll resettle himself within a few minutes.
We're now battling night time wakings!  He wakes 2 times needing to go back with out eating and 1-2 times starving for a feed.  I'm thinking he may be ready for a bit of cereal -he's a big boy, too - was 7lbs 14 oz at birth and 14lbs at the beginning of March.  He has his 4.5 month appointment tomorrow and I'm sure he's close to 17lbs now!
