4 am wake-feed or not??
« on: May 05, 2006, 19:46:36 pm »
My 6 month old has had many nights when she will sleep 12 hours and then we have a few nights when she wakes for a bottle. The wakings don't correspond with a growth spurt, so I am not sure if I should feed or offer water. Here is our routine:

7:30/7:45 wake
8:00 8 oz. Bottle
9:00 1-1.5 T. cereal/fruit mixed
10:00-11:30 nap
12:00 8 oz. Bottle
1:00-1-2 T. vegetables
2:00-4:00/4:30 nap
4:00 8 oz. bottle
5:00 1-1/5 T. cereal/fuit mixed
7:00/7:30 Bottle-10 oz./bed

Sometiems she will sleep straight through until 7:30. Sometimes she wakes around 4-5 am for a bottle (usually 5 oz.) and then straight back to sleep until 7:30. When she does take the 4 am bottle, her other bottles for the day stay the same. So, she has an additional 5 oz. for the day. I am just wondering, does she really need this am bottle. It's not a habitual waking, b/c it is not every day and never at the same time. I am just confused why some days she doesn't need it and some days she does.

Thanks so much,

Angie

My LO is 8 months and the nights she does wake I try to settle first, if that doesn't work I then feed her. 9-10 times she does wake she needs to eat. FOr whatever reason once a week or so she just needs to eat at night.

Thanks Karita,
I just wanted to make sure I am not feeding too much. She is still taking the same amount of formula plus her solids. I know she is not eating very much solids yet, but don't want to overfeed. I also don't want this feed to become a habit feed.

Thanks again  :)

Hi Angie,

I think their little systems take time to form a new (good) habit like sleeping through the night. Milena started sleeping through 5 weeks ago and was solid for the first 1.5 weeks. Then she started to have the wakes again and at random times between 4-5:30. Since she is bf and at the time did not start cereal, I fed her when she woke before 5 but if it was after 5 I tried to soothe instead and it worked. She has again slept through now. In the case where your darling is on measureable formula (you know quantity taken in) and on solids I would soothe instead of offering a feed, if she doesn't settle then I would offer a feed.

I'm sure that once they have the night sleep worked out without wakes they will start the teething and we will be dealing with it all over again ;D.

You are so right about the teething!  ;D We tried the paci last night and she just cried harder, which means she is truely hungry. So, I fed her. Maybe this is our 6 month gs.
