? about when to give formula and solids at 8 months
« on: May 07, 2006, 00:55:51 am »
Hi!

I have a question about formula timing and solids. I have been giving my little one formula before his meal. He drinks between 21 - 29 oz. of formula a day. When should I start switching it to solids first and then formula? Also, I give him milk in a  sippy cup after his meal and he ussually only takes a sip or so. When do I start feeding him solids and only offering him milk from his sippy?

There really aren't any set guidelines for when to offer solids first. Some do it that way from the very start, some start between 9-12 mo, and some keep doing breast/bottle first until whole milk is introduced at 1 yr. It's really up to what works for you and your DS, but formula should still make up the main part of his diet until you start whole milk.

You can switch entirely to the sippy if his formula intake stays where it should (around 24-26 oz). If not, I'd stick with the bottle until solids are the main source of his nutrition, which usually happens around 1 yr.

Totally agree with Tylersmommy  :D
We switched solids and bottle around at 8 months with no problems and to a sippy cup just recently with no problems. If your baby is happy having solids first and will still drink his bottle afterwards then that is fine.
So we now do:

Breakfast: with 2ozs milk in a cup
1-1.5hrs later 7-8ozs sippy cup/bottle
Lunch: With 4ozs in a cup
Dinner: with 2ozs in a cup
45mins later: 7-8ozs sippycup/bottle.
