Stubborn time while feeding HELP!!!!
« on: May 09, 2006, 12:57:10 pm »
i am hoping someone can help me with my problem these days..

riley is almost 5 months old and we are having a hard time getting her to eat. here is the story..

riley sleeps thru the night or i should say we she wakes at 5 we give her the paci and she wakes at 7 to start her day. she will take 4 oz and then all hell breaks loose. we burp her and then try to get the bottle back in but she starts to swat at the bottle and turns red in the face.. my new trick is to walk around the house with her and the distraction seems to help get the other 4 oz down. I know she is hungry first thing int he morning and she always takes 8 oz it is just a chore..

at 11 am we try to feed again and she will take 2 oz, then all hell breaks loose again, we have to almost force feed her or do things to trick her into eating.. this happens at every feed. we get a few oz in and then have to do something to stop her from fighting us..

It is very hard to leave her with anyone since they get so frustrated by her whenit come sto eating.. Should i be calling the doctor?? she ends up eating about 24 to 27 oz aday  but it is all a fight. she is fine after eating happy as can be and not alot of spit ups..also she is a little baby almost 5 months and only 13 lbs, so i feel i need to try my hardest to get as much in her as possible..

 do i just have to live with this struggle and try my hardest to get the formula in her?

I need HELP!!!!

Was she always like this or is it something new? What if you waited to burp her at the end, instead of doing it halfway, would she be okay? At 5 months Ella was okay with a burping at the end, if we interrupted it would also be hard getting it back in her mouth. If it is a new thing it could be teething or being older and distracted by all the new things she is noticing. Have you changed the flow of the nipple lately, as they can start refusing if it is too slow for there age (have to work too much to get it).

It sounds like she is a great baby sleeping through like that and you are doing a great job!!! I am interested to see if any of these help! ;D

Calum went through a stubborn stage at 5 months and I think a lot of LO's do.  I agree with everything Sarah has suggested, also try a 5 - 10 min break.

I know it is very frustrating and I also went through a stage of walking around with him.

Is she hungry between her feeds? It sounds like your on a 4hr EASY so thats not the problem  :-\ if you think she may be teething rub some teething gel on her gums prior to offering the bottle.

If it is new formula you have given her could it be an intolerance?
Is your LO constipated?
Is your LO currently suffering from any illness or medical condition?

Here is more info on teething.....

Does your LO display any of the following symptoms;
* restlessness, irritability and disturbed sleep patterns
* sore, red gums
* flushed cheeks
* loss of appetite
* a slight rise in temperature (but not above 39oC, which indicates a fever)
* dribbling (which may cause a rash or sore, chapped skin on the chin)
* a sudden desire to chew anything they can lay their hands on!
* an urge to bite. This should not be perceived as a sign of aggression or anger, more of a means to ease the pain.

Your LO does not necessarily need to have any teeth showing for her to be teeting, the process of the teeth pushing up through the gums is very sore, it makes their gums harden and they bite on everything.
