Feeding Schedule for One Year Old
« on: May 10, 2006, 19:59:52 pm »
My LO has just turned one and I'm wondering if I should make any changes to her feeding schedule.  Right now it looks something like this:

7:00   bottle
8:30   breakfast
9:30   nap
11:00 bottle
12:30 lunch
1:30   nap
3:00   bottle
4:00   snack
5:30   dinner
7:00   bottle
(6-7 oz of formula at each feeding)

I'm not sure if I'm feeding her enough because she's still waking up twice at night for her bottle.  She must be hungry because her waking time is erratic and she finishes 5-6 oz of milk each time.  I tried giving her more solids and milk in the day but she doesn't want to eat that much.

Her routine looks great, other than the night wakings. And while she probably is hungry at night, it sounds like it's gotten to be a habit to eat during the night, even though the times are erratic. And if I'm doing the math right here, it looks as if she's taking 35-40 oz of formula a day? At her age, 16-24 oz is a more appropriate, as more of her calories should be coming from solids food. Honestly, I think the only way you're going to be able to transfer those calories to daytime is to get rid of the night feeds. Although this thread is for younger toddlers, it may still have some good tips for you. Also, I believe Tracy addresses eliminating older baby night wakings in BWSAYP.

If you're ready to try eliminating the night feeds and you need more help, you might post on the Toddler Sleep boards as well, where you can get better age-apprpriate advice. Good luck!

Phoebe turns 1 next week..............time gone so quickly apart from first 12weeks!!!!!
This is what her schedule looks like.

700 am- bottle 4oz formula (now taken from beaker),
than followed by solid brekkie. half weetabix with cold milk or dry cherrios or ready brek brek with warm milk , always fruit a breakfast time and if no cereal she will have a yoghurt.

She will have a nap for 30min at 0930-1000

NO SNACK - just little juice

Lunch
1200- 8tablespns of meat-veggies- and some finger food. (chicken nuggets, chicken peach cassorole/chicken apple and sweetpot/ mini beef burger with veggies

NAP 1300-1500 in between those times for her. fits in with nursery days

NO SNACKS- juice only

DINNER/TEA 1645-1700

Thick soups made with milk (i make batches and freeze every couple weeks) Corn chowder, potato leek soup,
Thick Minestrone soup (pasta/chick peas andSweet pot) carbs are good at night as fill your LO up.
Pasta and homemade tomato sauce(with grated veggies so she can;t see them)

She has a bottle at about 1830 7oz and sleeps thru until about 0630am.

I agree, you need to look at reducing the milk intake as min at year (in UK) is 12oz and max is 20oz. Milk intake can be given other ways than a bottle, via cheese 2oz equal apporx 4oz milk, yoghurts 100ml = 4.5oz milk)

Your LO should be receiving more solids rather than milk as it will give more energy and will fill her more.
How much solids does LO eat?
I would look at dropping the afternoon feeds (12.00 & 1500) see how she get on with them first. Try replacing with calcium replacment.

Good luck, keep us posted so we can help.

hmm...i don't really know the exact amount that my LO is taking while she's at the babysitter's.  I've been told every day that she eats well, even more than the babysitter's 5 year old daughter.  My LO has been finishing an entire banana for snack these couple of days.  And that's after having cheerios.  We think that's a lot.  Is it?  Hmm...maybe I should ask my babysitter how much my DD eats exactly, e.g. tablespoons, cubes...  How much is enough per meal?

I would ask what she is eating keep a food diary for 1 week (a pain but it helps). A whole banana is a lot if you consider half a banana is a fruit portion for a LO. They take a while to digest and are slow releasing energy food. It sound picky doing it this way but you know what they are supposed to eat and any more is OK as longas it does not interfer with other meals.

OK I'll try that.

My DD's tummy is getting really big. I mean, it looks disproportionate to the rest of her body.  Is it alright?  Sorry if this sounds silly but I'm really worried that she may be overstuffing herself.  My DH thinks I'm paranoid  :P

To be honest with you, all toddlers' tummies usually look big compared to the rest of their bodies. Their stomach muscles aren't developed enough to hold their bellies in. If she was overeating, she'd probably have a stomch ache or show signs of gas or other discomfort.

Yep Phoebe is like a little budda.

She would let you know. As mums we are terrible "one more spoon when they have eaten a lot". Yep hold my hand up to that one. ;D

Thanks for all your replies.  I'll just stop worrying so much and watch her cues.  :)
