Need Help Progressing with Finger Food
« on: May 10, 2006, 21:23:58 pm »
DD has a limited diet due to some food intolerances and reflux. She's currently eating oatmeal, pears, peaches, apples, blueberries, sweet potatoes and peas - all purees. No dairy. She also does really well with Puffs and Cheerios.

Problem is that anything really lumpy or other finger foods make her gag. Have tried soft small pasta pieces as well as smushed peas. Any other ideas? Would like to keep her moving down the FF path but seem stuck.

We are re-introducing chicken tomorrow. Had tried that as FF but she wouldn't touch it so going to try to puree some boiled chicken into her pears or apples and see if we can get her used to the taste at least.

TIA.

Hi Karen,

We are on the slow path of finger food as well so i may not be that much help. So far we have given sandwiches, fruit, biscuits and pasta. My DD isn't that keen on finger food really prefers to play with it much likes us to feed her. However she is teething at the moment so is a little off her food as well. All i can suggest is keep trying that is what we are doing and as you are able to add more food to her diet you will be able to offer it as finger food.

I wouldn't worry too much about it...I think that like everything else, she'll try it when she's ready. Like Natasha said, your best bet is to keep offering. Try not to pressure her, just have it available on her tray or offer her a bite from your fingers. Most babies go through a finger food only stage sometime between 9-14 mo, and she's still pretty young. She'll come around!

Thanks guys - will definitely just keep trying and not pressuing. But any ideas on what might be easiest for DD? She's good with Puffs and Cheerios and teething biscuits too (we only use the Healthy Times ones - dairy and soy free).

How about steamed carrots (cut up small).  I also make adult oatmeal as a finger food for my DS.  I just make it really thick so when it cools a little it can be broken up into chunks.  She might gag at first, but it is worth a try.

Also, toast cut up into little pieces?!?!?!

Mine munches on a few grains or rice when we go to our favorite Mongolian place.  Kinda sticky, easy to hold on to.  Makes a cool mess on the table too!
