Need help understanding growth spurts
« on: May 10, 2006, 23:05:30 pm »
Hi ladies!  I need help with figuring out if my lo is going through a growth spurt.  She's 5 months old and has never had any true hunger cues for months - she did cry and put her fists in her mouth when she was a newborn, but doesn't do that any more.  She has been on a 4-hour EASY for a while, but doesn't freak out if she doesn't get fed right away.  She hasn't ever been a really good night sleeper, boy do I hope that changes soon, and will fuss at various times but goes back to sleep once given her binky.  I'm wondering if her night wakings are because she's hungry.  Here is her schedule - Any thoughts / suggestions you might have would be great.  Thanks!

Wakes around 6:45 / 7:00am
E - 6 - 7 oz. bottle @ 7:15am
2 tsp. rice cereal + 2 tsp. fruit @ 7:45am (just started this per ped. this week)
A -
S - goes down for nap @ 8:45 / 9:00am - usually only sleeps for 45 min. - 1 hour (We are going to work on extending this starting next week.  DH's grandmother watches lo and says she doesn't respond to PU/PD or W2S.  I personally don't believe her as I have no problem getting it to work on the weekends, so we are taking time off and will see what happens.)
A - if lo's nap is short
E - 6 - 7 oz. bottle @ 11:00am
A -
S - goes down for nap @ 1:00pm - will usually sleep for 1.5 - 2 hours
A - again, only if nap is short
E - 6 - 7 oz. bottle @ 3:00pm
A -
S - some times goes down for cat-nap @ 4:30pm - will sleep for .5 hour
A -
Start winding down and do bedtime routine @ 6:30pm
E - 5 - 6 oz. bottle @ 6:45 / 7:00pm
S - 7:00 / 7:15pm
DF @ 10:45 / 11:00pm

The fun begins right around when it's time for her DF, lo starts fussing, gets DF, and then is fine until around 4:00am....when she starts to wake up every 30 - 45 minutes.  I've tried doing W2S, but after 4 nights, she started getting up at 3:00am!!!  This is why I'm starting to think she might be going through a growth spurt.  Could that be it?  In the beginning, I tried doing an early DF and she wouldn't eat, so I switched to a 2:00am DF (she used to start fussing that early), but then she started to completely wake up, so I went back to the earlier DF this past week and she takes around 5 oz. without waking up and is usually really good and doesn't start fussing again until 3:00 / 4:00am.  Any thoughts / suggestions you might have would be great.  Thanks!

Do you feed her when she wakes at 4 am? You could try and see if she goes back to sleep longer. But, a growth spurt should only last for a short while.

My only other suggestion is that the Dream Feed may be disturbing her sleep. Especially since you have been messing with the time. I have known some mother's who say that their LO's would wake more with a dream feed and sleep longer if they didn't have one. Sometimes the milk may actually make them wake up - a wet diaper, or digestive issues. Just a thought.

By the way, Tracy says never to offer a dreamfeed past 11 pm, this will disturb their sleep. FYI

Hope this helps a bit, let me know.
