Wakes up at 4am...Feed or not feed???
« on: May 11, 2006, 03:29:50 am »
Hi,
My lo (about to be 16 weeks) has been waking up around 3-4am for a while now.  I'm trying to determine if it's for hunger or habit.  Sometimes, he cries murder so I assume he's hungry but then he'd only take 2oz (the most) or .5oz and falls back asleep.  Should I not feed him even though he maybe crying murder??

I've noticed that if I give him something to eat he'd sleep pretty well until 7am.  But if I ignore him and not feed him, he will still go back to sleep but will wake up every hour after that until we start our day at 7am..
What should I do???  We are transitioning to 3.5 hour EASY but this problem has been going on for awhile.

2 oz isn't much and sounds like an amount that they can do without. But, having said that, if he's waking up every hour afterwards without the feed I would go ahead and feed so that both of you can sleep peacefully until 7. Most babies still take one night feed at that age.

is yoru lo waking other times at night as well?  if not, try a dream feed, this is when before you go to sleep at night, or after your lo's first feed in the night time, you take them while they are still sleeping and feed them.  if you are botle feeding you can leave them in the crib and do it.  they will "top off" and this may help him getthrough to 7 without waking at 4.  if this does not work yo ucan try wake to sleep method.  you can read about how to do it in the baby whisperer tells all book.  this method works well when the baby is waking due to habit rather than hunger.

No, my lo is only waking up around the 3am-4am time  We are already dream feeding at 10:30pm and we do top off at 7:30pm just before bed.  Iif this is normal I guess I will just let it be for now.
Thanks.

Hi Melodie,
Yes, the wake is very normal, even with the top up and df. When my dd used to wake for feeds at that age I was doing the top up and df. I still do the top up and df now. If she continues to sleep well I may just not drop the df until she starts kindergarden ;).

Hi Melodie,
I am having a similar situation with my own 14week old ds. He was waking at 4:00 am and hungry! I would feed him but then he was not interested in the am feed at 6:30. he had been going through from df until 6:30 for 3 weeks already previous to this. One night, I decided to go without the dream feed and let him eat when he was hungry---ended up being at 2:30am. I fed him but guess what still woke up at 4:00am---did not cry and eventually fell back to sleep. I thus knew that the 4am waking was not due to hunger. that being said if he wakes at 4am and has not eaten since df at 10:30pm ----of course he is going to realize that he has not eaten and want to eat simply b/c he is awake. (?) This week I started wake to sleep---I am going in at 3am. It is exhausting me b/c I lie there wondering if I stirred him enough or whether it is going to work at all ---quite often I lay there awake until 4:30am. To top it off my son is now waking at 5:30am and will lie in his crib all happy until I go get him, huge smiles when I arrive. now bf at 5:45 am and hopefully every 3.5 hours after that. We---I think also like you-are having a lot of trouble with naps. poor ds had 5: 30-45min naps all day. I feel like all I do is get him to nap. anyway-- I am very tired and going to bed early tonight at 8:30pm. good luck with the 4am thing.

Hi,

This is my first post so apologies if I miss anything... my son (first baby) is 5 mnths old and is now night waking between 2:30 - 3:30am hungry. He used to sleep until atleast 5:30am!
I am giving df at 10:30pm and he normally takes 5-6oz. I have been feeding him when he wakes as assumed he was hungry - possible growth spurt? He usually takes another 5-6oz in about 15mins and is asleep before I lay him back in the cot. He then wakes again around 6:30am - 7:00am but does not want to feed. It is a real struggle to get him to take 1-2oz by 8:00am. Thi9s is not enough to see him through until 11:00am so I find I have to give him another small feed before putting him down at 9:00am (2-3oz). I have tried only giving him a small feed when he wakes during the night to see if this will help him be hungry at 7:00am but makes no difference. He still only wants a little feed if anything. Should I assume his night waking is not due to hunger? I have tried to resettle without feeding but he just cries until he is fed.

Is anyone going through the same with their LO?

Amanda.
