anyone do one nap before lunch permanently?
« on: May 11, 2006, 12:07:13 pm »
Hello,

Just wondering if anyone's toddler who is on one nap a day, if they do the one nap in the late morning?

I know Tracy's book aims for after lunch and we've been doing noon till 2:00ish pm for awhile.  But does anyone find something like 11:00 till 1:00ish works better and can they still stay awake till bedtime okay?

Just curious, because even after about 4 months of transitioning my (15mo. old) dd is still quite tired in the mornings.

Thanks,Tarri

Well we're kind of in the same boat as you... when dd wakes early (for her) ie: 6-ish, she has breakfast and then a big snack with a bit of milk before pj's and nap time, which is around 11. Then when she wakes up I give her lunch. I just look at it as she's still having food at the same time one is just larger than the other. Does that make sense? I'm kind of assuming as she gets older she'll have more awake time in the morning and will want lunch before her nap? We do that on the days she sleeps until 8 but...  :-\

Hi there,

My 18.5 month old DS has been on one nap since the 14mo mark.  It happened almost overnight.  Bedtime is about 6:30pm, waketime is usually around 6am-6:30am (though he stays in his crib til 7am).  Breakfast at 8am....snack at about 11am, and naps at 11:30am til around 2pm, then has lunch.  We've had this same schedule since we switched to one nap.

It suits us just fine and I'm hesitant to change it, though I admit it would be easier to have lunch before the nap.  It would allow us lots more freedom to get up and go when he wakes up.  But again, I don't want to rock the boat.  :) I figure he'll sort of show us when he's ready, simply by taking longer to fall asleep at naptime.

Take care,
F

Until the age 2, we did nap from 11-1.  Then had lunch together, giving us a short morning - out locally for a couple of errands or messy play.  Then the whole of the afternoon after that.  He managed from 1 until 7.30pm.

Since then... he's been too awake at 11 to go to sleep.  So he now sleeps 1.15- 3.30 (but often 4).  I HATE IT so late.  Unless I am really organised, we don't get much done in the morning, to do early lunch at 12ish ( I don't like him sleeping on a full stomach).  Or trying to keep him awake in the car so he can still have good quality sleep.  So that means home to be able to prepare it.  I feel trapped by the afternoon nap.  But that's my opinion.  I am getting used to it and having my lunch with him and I do like having those 2-3 hrs of Y time / get work done etc.  But by the time he wakes at 3.30, got dressed, had a drink etc I don't feel like we get much done then either, because I have to be back to get dinner ready.

Sorry - I sort of hijacked your post with my vent.  Go with what works for you and your child and your day.

Alex

ever since Ryan has been on 1 nap , he's always gone in the morning .it use to be 11.30 - 2.00 pm , he had a little snack and then have his lunch when he woke up. he started to refuse naps so we figured he wasn't tired enough so we went to nap at 12.30pm but he would be napping too long , sometimes 3hrs+ which was affecting his bedtime of 7.30pm . we started to wake him at 2.00pm to protect bedtime then slowly moved his nap back to 12.00pm.
he still has a snack around 10.30 /11.00am then goes for a nap at 12.00pm awake by 1.30pm. this has always worked for us , if i was to put him down for a nap any later then he will wake too late and bedtime moves later. in the beginning he would have a grouchy time around 5.30pm where he was getting tired but we would just go for a walk , he soon was able to cope till bedtime.

Tarri, my friend's lo is the same.  She is nearly 2 and ever since she transitioned to one nap has always slept between about 11 and 1 (though usually for only 1.5 hours).  I say go with whatever works.

Time and time again I consider it.  Carmela eats lunch at 11:30 and then right now is put down for her nap at 1:00.  Around 11ish she starts showing her sleepy signs but then lunch rejuvenates her.  So I'm not sure what my final plan will be.  Right now she's getting two top molars (her last ones) so I am praying that once they come through, it will be clear what she wants her routine to be!

Georgia (13 months) used to have her nap at 1pm but we started having problems with bedtime and night wakings and having read through a lot of posts on this site, I realised she may be sleep deprived so watched carefully for signs.  The last 4 days, she has been having her nap at 11am (for 2hrs15mins usually) then lunch at 1.30pm.  She also needs a 30 minute nap in the afternoon (around 3.45pm) and has now started settling straight away again at bedtime and the nightwakings have reduced/stopped.  So to sum up, I am sticking to the nap before lunch from now on!
