what age for strawberries?
« on: May 11, 2006, 12:38:13 pm »
Hi there
At what age is it OK to start giving lo strawberries?  There seems to be a real difference of opinion - some people say they are allergenic and should wait till a year, while for example in the Annabel Karmel cookbook it has a recipe that includes strawberries that's suitable for 7-9 months.  My dd is 8 1/2 months old now, eats all sorts of things and hadn't had any allergic reactions so far.  Just that strawberries are in season here at the moment and it seems a shame not to give them to her when they're so scrummy......  Any views welcome!
Cheers
Rachel x

I would definitely want until one year - strawberries and raspberries are highly allergenic and not worth the risk. Blueberries and cranberries are safe if you want to feed those - my DD LOVES blueberries.

Annabel Karmel's books are good but not so accurate on the allergy front (same with Super Baby Food).

Cooking strawberries removes the allergy risk therefore Annabel Karmel  includes the recipes for that age group. I held off with raw until my little one was 10 months old; she had no allergies to anything so I did not have to Wait. But I would have no issues at all with cooked berries.
