Oatmeal Allergy
« on: May 11, 2006, 17:55:05 pm »
My lo just started solids about 2 weeks ago. She was on rice and no reaction at all. I started her on Oatmeal (Milupa) about 3 days ago and all this werid stuff was happning, sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, swollen tongue. After the first day, didn't really notice any symptoms, 2nd day started tonotice and then yesterday they were full blown. She has not had Oatmeal for more than 24 hours, but all the symptoms are still there. I actually think that they got worse today. I have given her benedryl which seems to help a bit, but once it wears off the symptoms are back in full force.

Has anyone ever experienced this before?

It's more rare, but you can be allergic to oatmeal.  I'd skip it and try barley instead.

My dd is allergic to wheat and we tried rice, oat, and barley cereal she appears to only NOT be allergic to the rice. So we are just feeding her rice cereal and our doctor suggested trying to reintroduce the others down the road.

I just came on the board to post the same question!

We tried organic oatmeal cereal today mixed with water for the first time and dd broke out into a rash all over her chest approximately 4 hours after. It's now been 8.5 hours and the rash is heavier and also starting on her chin and lower cheeks. I'm sure it was caused by the oatmeal (no new soaps used in bath or for clothing washing), it was the only thing new introduced.

Rice and millet are the least allergenic of the grains. But of course rice is constipating - so if relying on heavy amounts of rice be sure to balance out with extra fruit/fiber.

Many doctors don't suggest trying oatmeal until after 9 months because of possible allergic reactions.

First Time - if the rash is from the oatmeal (which is sounds like it is), it should go away 24-48 hours after you stop the food.
