Dreamfeed in cot??
« on: May 14, 2006, 20:50:03 pm »
Hi, I'm new to this website, only recently been put onto the babywhisperer by a friend (what a saint she is!) and have been trying out her methods (mostly with great success) on DS who is now 4.5weeks old. We had already had him on a 2.5-3hr feeding schedule (100% breastfed), each feed followed by activity and then sleep - pretty much what EASY advocates.

Anyway, I had been waking him for a feed between 10 and 11pm but last night decided to try the dreamfeed and not wake him. So I expressed my milk so that my husband could give DS the dreamfeed. We did it while he was still asleep in his cot - didn't lift him out for fear of waking him. Worked like a charm (once DH could get his mouth open) and he steadily drank about 60ml. Not a peep from him till 3am for his next feed.

So, my question is - is it ok to give him the bottlefeed while he's lying in his cot, or should we be lifting him out - and if so, why?

Thanks heaps for any comments you may have.
Anna

My lo is 6 months old- and we've been doing a DF for about 3 months now- I was never able to successfully do a DF until I did it without picking my son up and just giving him a bottle while still in his crib.  It has worked great for me- as before we started this method, my ds ALWAYS woke up.  Now he rolls over when he has had enough- or just drains the bottle completely with no wake up.  I thought I was the only mom who did this!  So my personal opinion from several months experience is this is ok.  If you are worried- like about him choking or whatnot, you could always stay by his side after the DF to make sure he is peacefully and safely sleeping.

Is he flat on his back??  KInda scary to give him a bottle like that IMO for fear of choking or ear infections!!  How about elevating his hed so it's higher than his body to just eliminate the risks!!  HTH!!  Congratulations on your EASY succes btw!!
Blessed beyond measure.

If you intend to give dreamfeed, you REALLY must lift your LO's head up for all the reasons Owelley has listed below.

Thanks for the replies - Good advice. as it was we made sure his head was on one side while he fed so he could easily turn away when he'd had enough or in case he got too much of a mouthful. From now on we'll be sure to also lift his head anytime we feed him in his cot, though we'll also try to take him out of the cot and manage a feed without waking him.

I also did give the DF while my DS was on his crib, but we also have a wedge that has a 30°angle so his head is allways a bit higher than his body, we don't give a DF anymore 'zause he doesn't need it, but it did work like a charm!! so just mak e sure his head is elevated ;)
