Any tips on how to wean 9 1/2 month old to formula?
« on: May 16, 2006, 13:25:58 pm »
I have been BF since she was born and still am but I would like to wean my lo to formula now.. (and only BF at night before bed)
I have tried a couple of times to give her the bottle with formula and she turns her nose up at it!

She has drank EBM from a bottle and she also drinks water from a sippy cup, so I know she can do both! Its just the formula taste I guess?  I have been told it is sometimes easier to have someone else give the bottle/sippy but I don't have that option at the moment- it has to be me.

Any advice?? Do I wait until she is hungry for it? Do I cover in layers so she can't smell me!!?  :o

Also, since she uses a sippy cup should i put formula in a cup instead of a bottle or would it be more comforting to drink formula from a bottle?

Ahhh! please help!

TIA!!

at 9 1/2 months your better off going strait to whole milk. Your LO is old enough for that. It'd be a much easier switch for you in the long run.

Yes Stacy good start is good for brest fed babies, but at 9 1/2 months its not worth the battle to get them to take formula. They'll only be on formula a couple months that way, its easier on mom, and for babies tummy, to start cows milk as then its less of a transistion for them. Especially if you still want to bf once or twice a day, and even if you don't their bodies are ready to digest cows milk.

If your dead set against starting cows milk a stage 2 (6 months + not toddler) formula would be better anyway.

In bottle fed babies yes. For breastfeeding mom's who want to wean at 9 months they say go to Whole milk. This was my original plan :)

I think its one of those, depends who you ask and where your from things LOL

My DD's doctors has me switching her to whole milk at 9 months now because of her regecting formula.

Thanks for your responses!

I will not be giving my lo cow's milk to drink at all, I plan on using a follow up formula after 12 months so it will be formula either way!
...I will try carnation Good start

Stage 2 is a good thought too. I know my doctor actually advises against milk till 12  months........

We have used stage 2 since DS was 6months, to keep his iron levels topped up. I agree with Stacy, in the UK we are also told cows milk only at 12months (unless you use it for cooking purposes) because formula/breastmilk are both far superior and better for your LO.

There are a few posts that may help you give your Lo a bottle with formula https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=60765.0 - reply from emsandmegan

It is excellent she takes from a sippy, yes by all means try formula in her sippy and I think the key is to persever, she will take it when she is hungry. It may be an idea to keep her water sippy separate from her milk sippy - then she know what to expect.

Here is more info....

Why do experts recommend waiting to introduce cow's milk until a baby is 12 months old?
There are several reasons to delay the introduction of cow's milk until your baby reaches his first birthday. Most important, a baby's digestive system can't digest cow's milk proteins. Cow's milk also has too much sodium, potassium, and chloride, which can tax your baby's kidneys.

Even if his system could handle it, cow's milk doesn't have all the vitamins and minerals (especially vitamin E, zinc, and iron) that he needs for growth and development in his first year. Giving a baby cow's milk could even cause iron deficiency and internal bleeding. And it can increase his risk of an allergic reaction.

Once your baby's digestive system is ready to digest it, though, milk becomes a powerful ally. A great source of calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A, and magnesium, milk will build your toddler's bones and teeth and help his body regulate his blood coagulation and muscle control. Almost all milk is fortified with vitamin D, which helps the body absorb the calcium it needs.

Milk also provides protein for growth, as well as carbohydrates, which will give your child the energy he needs to toddle all day! And if your child gets enough calcium from the get-go, there's evidence that he'll have a lower risk of high blood pressure, stroke, colon cancer, and hip fractures later in life.
