She won't take solids!
« on: May 18, 2006, 16:23:34 pm »
I'm seeking out help cuz I'm going bonkers here.  We've been trying for over a month now and she was small amounts of rice cereal and nothing else.  In fact, if you give her a taste of something else like fruit or veggie she'll clamp her mouth shut and not even eat the rice cereal after that.

I can't tell you how much baby food we've thrown out (I expected a fair bit during the beginning, but it's way past my expectations!) and we had to give her some medicine for a cold she has and now she won't eat the rice cereal again.

Does anyone have any idea how to help?

Hi Casey,

Just wanted to let you know my lo is doing exactly the same thing (except she won't even have the few spoons of baby cereal). Natasha gave me a few pointers that might be helpful, although if you've been trying for a month I suspect you've already tried them  ::) . Here's a link to my post: https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=60596.0.

I'll be following your topic in the hope that something comes up that will work....

Best of luck in the meantime,

Sara

Have you tried mixing just a small amount of the new food with her cereal? If she takes it, you can gradually increase the amount of new food in the mix. When we started solids with Tyler, it took over a month for him to take more than one bite of anything. Suddenly, out of the blue one day he just started eating. It took some perseverance and patience, but she'll come around!

Oh momtokatiebug, I feel for you as we have experienced  a similar thing. Gage decided that he prefers store bought food vs homemade ::) so I now mix them both. We have seem to come out of the slump (knock on wood), and I think what helps is feeding 1.5 -2.0 hrs after the bottle. He seems to be hungrier then. I am also contemplating cutting out a bottle as he is not eating much formula either ::) Anyway, just hang in there and keep offering her food. The other gals have given great advice, just keep trying different things. Before you know it she will be a teenager eating you out of house and home ;)

PS I know what you mean about wasting food, Gage likes to see me go through 2-4 types of food before he will chow on the magic one ::) As a result, I bend the rules a bit on reusing baby food.

Hi Casey

I am sure the fact that Katie isn't feeling well is contributing to her not wanting to eat her solids?  How is she with her intake of bottle when sick?

My dd, Sydney, has been sick quite a bit as well as she goes to daycare also and is always around a lot of sick babies ::)  She has just started to "like" her solids and it has been a month now since we started trying.  We started at 6 months and she is now 7 months.  She is still somewhat hesitant though and still prefers her bottle.  She doesn't take ANYWHERE near some of the recommendations I have seen in some baby books, but she is gaining weight so all is well.

I suggest trying what TylersMom recommended and mixing new food with her cereal.  I did this for Sydney as she LOVES her oatmeal, and it did make her take the new food better.

Also, I got in the habit of warming Sydney's food for her.  She won't take it cold now :P  Do you warm Katies?

HTH and Katie starts feeling better.
