13 month won't eat veges or meat
« on: May 19, 2006, 08:36:00 am »
I know everyone says it's just a phase, and he will start eating again, but how and when????

2 weeks ago my son suddenly refused to eat his dinner which of course mostly comprised of veges and meat. He'd only eat yoghurt or custard. I thought it was teething issues, but with no teeth popping thru, I"ve decided it's a vege issue. Finally last night and tonight he ate some mcaroni cheese, but that's the best so far. I've tried veges during the day, but still no luck.

He's never been a good eater, but this has just made everything harder. He won't even eat bought food anymore.

At what point should I become concerned, and can anyone give me any ideas on what to do. He doesn't/hasn't eaten finger veges ever (spits them out) and I always give him a spoon to try feeding himself. What should I do next?
I would appreciate any advice you can offer.

All you can do is just keep on offering.  And only offer healthy choices.  It could still be teething, it took a few months for Ewan's molars to come through and they did affect his eating.

He's not waking at night, and doesn't always finish his bottle, so I know he's not hungry, which is a relief. He actually ate 1/2 a jar of food last night plus some custard then a biscuit! Amazing. I brought him into our lounge, fed him a bit later than usual (5.30pm instead of 5pm) and had Baby Einstien on, so who knows, maybe it was one or all of those 3 changes that made the difference. I'll try again tonight and see what happens. If I can get him eating jars again, then maybe I can sneak some of my own veges into those until he's eating properly again. I was wondering if maybe my veges were gettting a bit too boring for him.

There's a huge decrease in appetite that normally happens around 1 yr. It's pretty common for toddlers to eat less and less as the day goes on, then eat next to nothing for dinner. Tyler's always done this, so we switched around when we offered what foods. His biggest meal is usually breakfast or lunch, so that's when I offer veggies and they're much more likely to be eaten. When all else fails, I do resort to hiding them in other foods!

Does he eat fruit?

I would totally echo what's already been said about food intake decreasing once they go past 1 - you'll find that some days he might eat and some days he'll probably eat not very much at all.  Try not to worry and to look at food intake over a longer period eg a week rather than in the day

Thanks for all your support and reassurances.  :) Things seem to be improving as we've now had 2 nights of eating jarred food. I'm going to try for a whole jar again tonight and see how he goes. He's eating bananas and apples and raisins daily, which I'm pleased about. I'm going to keep going with jars of watties food for a week or so then reintroduce home veges once I know he's happy eating dinner again. I noticed the other thread regarding veges, so will try out some of those ideas too! ;)

I have also noticed in my 12-month-old DS that he is eating less than he has in the past.  Every now and then he'll become disinterested in his veggies, but he loves yogurt so I put a tad of that onto the tip of a spoonful of veggies and that usually works.

My dd is going thru a veggie hating phase.  Although she'll still eat canned corn and canned beets cut into pieces.  But I've gotten really sneaky with other veggies likes brocolli and caulieflower and brussel sprouts.  I puree them and mix them into a cheese sauce to go on pasta or rice.  And voila, she's eaten her veggies :)
