smelly nipples
« on: May 20, 2006, 01:29:46 am »
If anyone has suggestions on how to get the dish detergent smell out of silicone nipples, our 8 week old son would be very grateful.

I thought our Spirited lo was finally down for a nap, so I ran hot, soapy water in the sink and dumped in the bottles and nipples. Then he... well, let's just say there was no afternoon nap.  :-\  I forgot all about the bottles, until the water was cold.  Now they smell pretty strongly of dish detergent.

This isn't the first time it's happened, but they haven't smelled this strongly before. Lately, he's been practically wrinkling his nose at his bottles, and we thought he suddenly didn't like his formula, or that he was having some other feeding problem. But I think it may just be the residual smell/taste from sometimes leaving the nipples in the hot soapy water too long.

I tried soaking the clean nipples in equally hot water with baking soda, vaguely remembering that baking soda removes odors from plastic containers. I think I'll try soaking them longer, but I'm also open to any suggestions that don't involve buying new nipples.

Thanks!

Have you tried boiling them for 5 min?  I use Playtex Silicone nipples and once a week I boil them.

Hello
You could try soaking them in hot water and baking soda. I never tried it for nipples but have for other things and it worked. I have noticed a soapy smell with washing them right away, and was always affraid that the smell would make his milk taste bad, so I found an unsented dish soap. You may want to check for this in the organic section of your grocery store or a health food store. It costs a bit more but I only use it for my DS bottles, nipples etc.... And no more smelly nipples, even if I forget about them. HTH

You know, I never noticed if they smelled or not.  Now I'm right curious to see if mine do too lol.

I dont' have any advice, but just wanted to share a laugh with you.  We use bottles too, but I am so used to seeing breastfeeding problems and questions, that when I saw the title to you post, I thought to myself, "wow, now there is a mom that gets right to the point".   :D :D :D :D :D :D  Just had to laugh....especially after reading your post.

I'm glad I could provide a laugh! I did recognize the humor in the title, but it was also pretty accurate, so...

Just to clarify what our LO has been doing:
He's been grabbing the bottle pretty much since we brought him home from the hospital. Lately he hasn't been latching on and immediately going to town, as he always has before. He just opens his mouth, we stick the nipple in and he gums it... then rolls the drops around in his mouth (like he's taste-testing it) and makes a face and acts like he's gagging. Then (if I'm the one feeding him) he turns his head like he wants to breastfeed, and grabs at my boob.  ??? (He's been bottlefed since the beginning, and I'm finally dried up.) Then we offer him the bottle again and he reluctantly latches on and eats. He does this whether the bottle is warm or cool, whether the formula was just mixed or the end of a days batch. We tried switching to the next size nipple, which worked for one feeding and then was too fast for him.

I thought of the detergent smell because an old roommate used to use scented dishwashing detergent, and the pots and pans always smelled like it when we cooked, and sometimes you could even sorta taste it in the food. I happened to pick up a different detergent than I'd been using (no real brand loyalty), and it seems to have more residual scent. (Palmolive orange antibacterial).

The baking soda in hot water seems to work, to an extent, but I have to rinse them well, or they seem kinda powdery. Boiling in plain water didn't seem to do much for the smell.

He should be switching nipple sizes soon and, if he's hungry enough, he'll eat. We just took him for his 2 mo checkup, and he weighed in at 13 lbs 4 oz (I've lost count of his chins!).

In the meantime, I'll check the stores and see about an unscented detergent for his bottles.

Thanks!

Hi there, I have an allergy to scented washing up liquid so I use the surcare brand. It is unscented and very gentle on skin. I'm not sure if you'll get this where you are but maybe there is something similar? My ds used to wrinkle his nose up at the smell of the sterilising fluid when he was little. We have a steam steriliser this time and dd has had no probs. HTH

BTW i love the title too!!

Are you using silicone or latex teats? You might want to try another type of teat.  We used silicone teats with the haberman and the latex with his other bottles because they were a better shape.

Is the teat you are using the same shape and size as your own tipples?

Also, check if your dish soap is anti-bacterial. These types of soap leave a chemical residue and aren't recommended here in Canada for baby things.

I've never breastfed, so no idea what my nipples would look like under those circumstances.

Also, check if your dish soap is anti-bacterial. These types of soap leave a chemical residue and aren't recommended here in Canada for baby things.

I was not aware of that. Haven't seen it anywhere. Good to know!

Apparently, this whole thing was - in part - because he was getting ready to switch from 3 hr to 4hr EASY. Just about to turn 3 months, and having a hard time with it. Eating LESS (per feeding & daily total), even though we've stretched feedings out to about 4 hours. and switched to the next size nipple. But the detergent smell was certainly part of the initial problem. I tried to find unscented dish detergent, but Whole Foods (our health food store) didn't seem to carry any. I did get a less chemical detergent, with natural almond/cherry scent, and it doesn't seem to be as easily absorbed.

Thanks for all the suggestions & comments.  :)
