Drying up??
« on: May 21, 2006, 12:55:57 pm »
Ok am now starting to panic. Have been exclusively bf my lo for 10 weeks and he is thriving although ot was a very rocky first three weeks. I am relaly now enjoying the whole experience. I posted a thread earlier about now  beginning to need to feed from 2 sides at some feeds.( baby fussing after one side and doesnt settle) I was just onto a friend who said i might be drying up. She says this happens every women but i think thats bull . Please teel me it is!! MY baby is feeding three hourly and once during the night. I am also expressing aftert the morning feed. Do you think my supply maight be dwindling as i  now have to feed off both sides. Also is it inevitable that my milk will dry up. Am very confused!! and dont want to think about having to introduce formula til i have to return to work in august. Baby is happy to got hree hours usually and is generally very content
Thanks

Rubish info from your friend! ;D

Your lo is getting bigger and growing so chances are your lo needs the quantity in both breasts to fill up. I started my dd on one side when she was wee and then switched to both sides, plus with using both sides your breasts will produce more milk as they are going a shorter time period between feeds (3 hours vs 6 hours). Just be sure to rotate which side you offer first.

It's great to hear that you are enjoying the experience after a rocky start. It gets even better with age, my dd will look up at me, gently touch my chin and my hair now, it's such a sweet experience.

You will probably feel less full than in the beginning as the breasts get accustomed, but still no need to worry. For the most part, the way we "dry up" is by not taking care of ourselves (not drinking enough water, etc) or by replacing feeds with formula or supplementing. During growth spurts I would recommend following their cue and going to more of a "feed on demand" so that your supply can keep up, otherwise the 3 hour easy (and later, the 4 hour) works great.

Moving to 2 -sided feeding is a very natural step. Great advice from previous poster.
