Are Short feedings Okay?
« on: May 21, 2006, 23:10:37 pm »
My little one is 5 weeks old and nurses pretty much every 3 hours except for one 4 hour span at night.  He nurses for about 5 min on each side maybe seven.  If he goes longer which is rare he tends to spit up a lot.  When i went out the other day i took my pump with me and pumped when i would usually nurse.  In 10 minutes on each side i made a total of 7 oz.  This is plenty of milk for my son, right?  Should i worry that he is not nursing longer?  He has about 10 really wet diapers a day if not more. He has a bowel movement probably ever other day or third day on which he has more than one on that particular day.  Does this sound right?  I know some say their little ones nurse for a lot longer.  This also throws a damper in our EASY routine sometimes because well eating only takes 15 minutes max with burping included.  suggestions?

Congratulations on your little one and welcome to the site  ;D
You have a "super sucker" on your hands... just like my girls.  He is doing fine, as long as he is producing the wet/dirty diapers (he is) and he is happy and gaining weight.  The only thing I would suggest changing, is only offering one breast at a feed, that would give him more hind milk, which is better for him.  Enjoy the quick feeds!

congrats on the lo! i have a super sucker too and i found the same thing about feeding more, which is what led me to offer one boob, which is what led my friend to loan me her bw book! since the switch, avery is much happier and seems quite full. lots of wet diapers and about 1 big poopy every 2-3 days. she feeds in about 9-10 mins on one boob per feeding, and has gained almost 4 lbs since birth! dr seems very pleased, and i love the short feedings (esp in the middle of the night :o) bc i get more time to flirt with her and make her smile.. during the daytime of course,.. at night i lazily crawl back to bed!

i've actually been wondering the exact same thing- she only feeds on one side and for about 10-15 minutes every 3 hours (with a cluster before bed). i used to try to get her to eat more and take the other breast, but she would scream! she would act like she was hungry- latch on quickly and suck, but then would spit it out and scream.  i thought something was wrong with my milk or something.  but since i've given up on trying to get her to eat more, and just let her feed until she comes off the first side, it's been much easier. she must be getting enough- plus she's gained almost 5 lbs since birth!  if she hasn't eaten enough, she will just let me know within a half hour, in which case i'd feed her again thinking that she must not have had a good feed.  your lo is just a very efficient eater!

as far as the EASY routine, i just had to adapt to her. i have to put her to bed as soon as she gets tired, even if it means that it's only been 1/2 hour of activty...

Good this theme came up. My LO is eats about 10-20 minutes. This morning he nursed for 25 min , I was really surprised :o, but he was basically sleeping after this one.

We were pretty quick at nursing too - as long as the diapers are good and baby is happy there is no health concerns! I would just adjust for more "a" time on easy or maybe work with a 3 1/2 hour easy rather then 4 for awhile. The routine is key not so much the clock!

Hi Girls,
My baby feeds in between 5 and 7 mins!! - hyperspeed! I judge times by outting him down an hour and fifteen after wakening and it seems to work perfect,
Its brill having a supersucker isnt it.
