My LO will be 21 weeks on Wednesday, and I'd like to start cereal this week. I talked to my pediatrician, and we both agreed to wait until 5 months if possible, which is around now. I think this is the right time because he's now draining 3 of the 5 8 oz bottles he's getting, and the other 2 he's almost draining. So he's really close to topping out on the liquid feeds I'm giving him. He's nearly 18 lbs, so he's a very big boy! He seems to have lost his tongue thrust reflex, and I've tested him with a spoon, and he seems to do OK with it! He's got great sitting muscles right now too.
OK, so here's my questions on starting cereals:
1) Do I give them to him AFTER his bottle? I'm guessing yes since I want him to get most of his nutrition from the bottle.
2) I read the intro and know I start with just 1 tsp at first. How gradually do you increase to 2 Tbs? And then once you reach 2 Tbs, is that when you add in a 2nd meal, and then a 3rd?
3) Once you've added in 3 meals of cereal, is that when you start adding in other solids like veggies and fruits?
4) I belong to a message board on another website, and a woman who had a baby the same month as me said her son is taking 1/2 cup of cereal right now. Our babies weigh the same. I'm just wondering, will there be a point where I will feed him that much cereal, or do you move on to other solids instead? I've just only ever heard 2 Tbs mentioned as a measurement.
Sorry if these questions seem dumb, but solids flummox me! I've been putting them off as long as possible (obviously, since I've got an 18 lb baby and he's just now starting cereal at 21 weeks!), but he's about hitting the ceiling on formula and I don't want him to go hungry. Not that he doesn't have enough fat in those cute little cheeks to last him through a few winters!
