What Milk should my LO be drinking 20 months
« on: May 23, 2006, 11:38:14 am »
Hey there,

Don't know why I have been thinking this - but my LO is on Nestle Formula milk for 1+. Would you reccommend him staying on this milk or moving onto normal Cows Milk. If normal Cows Milk - Full Cream - Low Fat or No Fat. Also would I then have to heat the milk on the stove instead of the microwave? I seem to remember that you can't microwave milk cause it destroys the good nutrients - or does this only apply to Formula milk.

My DS I would say is a normal toddler eater - eating sometimes or not at all. So I'm no worried about his intake of food. He drinks about 600 - 800mls of FM a day... To be honest I don't mind which one I give him - I was just wondering what everyone else is doing and what everyone's opinions are.

 :) :)

Thanks
Kate

Hi there Kate,
My 19-month old DS has been drinking cow's milk since he turned 1 year.  I think that's pretty common here in the US.  He is drinking full-fat (not heated, but cold, out of the fridge), maybe about 15-17 ounces throughout the day.  I believe that it's ok for them to have low-fat once they are 2 years old.  There's nothing wrong with heating the milk...it does not effect the nutrients of the milk.

I hope that helps!

We've also done full-fat cow's milk since 1 yr, and we still do even though Tyler's over 2 because he's pretty skinny. When we transitioned him to whole milk, we gradually starting giving him bottles colder and colder until he took them straight from the fridge so we wouldn't have to warm his sippy cups of cow's milk. You can heat it if you prefer, but I believe the reason the microwave isn't recommended is because it can create "hot spots" in the liquid that you can't detect, even after you've stirred, shaken, or tested it. That puts your LO in danger of being burned by hot liquid when he goes to swallow it. You might be thinking of breastmilk...the microwave does destroy the nutrients in that. HTH!

Hi,

DD switched to full fat cows milk when she was 1yr old, this is the recommeded age in the UK.  She has organic milk!

Thanks for all your replies - funnily enough I poured myself a glass of Full Fat Milk from the fridge this morning - and DS was saying "some some some" so I gave him a sip and he said: "icky - poof" I did have a giggle  ;D  ;D . Maybe he'll like it better if it warmed up....

Thanks again,
Kate
