She wont take her bottle
« on: May 23, 2006, 15:55:13 pm »
My daughter is 4.5 months old and over the past few days she has been fighting against her bottle.  She has become totally disinterested with it.

I am positive it is not her gums/teething because when her gums were sore she wouldnt have the teat in her mouth for a while, would eventually give up and then have the bottle, when she is teething I use Dentinox and then she will take the bottle but that is not making any difference at all - now she is just howling everytime I attempt to put the bottle in her mouth and when I do get in her mouth she pushes it out with tongue and just plays with it like she does when she is full up and will then eventually just fall asleep.

She has now missed two out of her last three feeds. She wouldnt take her last feed yesterday and went to bed without it, she woke several times in the night because of this and was wide awake at 6am this morning as she was starving (incidentally when she has missed a bottle she will take the next one with minimal fuss).

Missing all these bottles means that she is probably only getting 18-20 oz of milk a day at present.

Her feed times are as follows

7.30am
11.30am
3.30pm
7.00pm
11.00pm

7.00pm yesterday she took 6oz, 11.00pm she had nothing, 7.30am she had 5oz, 11.30am she had nothing (even though she was hungry for it and demanding it) and she is at Grandmas now so will wait and see what happens for her 3.30pm feed

I tried changing the teat size like someone had recommended but the milk just ran down her chin and she still wasnt interested in the bottle.

I dont know what to do anymore.  She is clearly hungry as she cries right on cue at feed time and gets excited when she sees the bottle

I am not particularly worried just fed up and frustrated about fighting with her every time I try to feed her and am thanking the lord that she has gone to Grandmas this afternoon as my head is buzzing and I think I might have lost my temper with her. I also know that when she doesnt eat enough in the day I will be up half the night with her.

Has anyone got any advice?

My 4 mth old ds has been having bottle issues as well.  Mostly with my husband, but occasionally with me.  It helps if the bottle is nice and warm and there is minimal distractions.  Sometimes my ds doesn't seem interested, he bobs on and off of the bottle, it takes forever to get him to take a few ounces.  Very frustrating.  It only lasted a week or two, he seems to be back on track now.
