Up Too Much with 8 mo. old
« on: May 24, 2006, 01:31:28 am »
I don't know if this fits in as a prop problem or in night wakings. However, I have finally got my son to go to sleep in his crib, on his own. Now I just need him to stay asleep! On average, he gets up at least 4-5 times each night. He cries and cries, but I know he can't be hungry, so I am trying to phase out night feeds, but it isn't going so well. I guess I am not real sure of how to go about it.
I have also used a paci as a prop for him to use to go to sleep, but occassionally it is that very prop that causes him to wake up. He doesn't really use the thing except for sleep.
Now it seems that he has become dependent upon the bottle/paci to help him go back to sleep when he wakes during the night. To make it worse, he is also having some seperation anxiety that rears its head during the night.

Just as an example, our night goes something like this

7:30 Night Routine/ Feed
8:00 Bedtime
Approx 11-12 1st waking and every 90mins-2hrs from then on
6:30-7 am Wake up time

On a bad night the wakings can occur every hour!!
HELP!!

A few questions

When does he wake from his last nap?  Could 8 p.m. be too late of a bedtime?  I would try moving it to 7:30 if his A time is longer that 4.5 hours.  My Lo is 8 months too and she is overtired if she is awake any longer than 4 hours before bed.
Do you only have one paci in his bed?  Can he put it into his mouth himself?  Mine also takes a paci and only for sleep, so we decided to put 5, yes 5, in her bed.  She always seems to find them and now hangs onto one while sucking on the other one.  I guess you could say that this is her lovey.
Has he made any developmental leaps?  Crawling, standing, etc???

sorry so many questions.  It might help us to help you figure out the problem.

great job on getting him to sleep in his crib

Thank you for your thoughts. His 1st nap is at 9:30 am and usually lasts until 11:30. The 2nd one is at 2pm and lasts until 4pm (sometimes 5). We start getting ready for bed at 7:30 and he is generally out by 8pm (Though last night he passed out on me at 7pm: we had a busy day). I
As for the paci, he starts out with one and spits it out in his sleep. When he wakes in the night, I ususally cannot find it so I get a new one. By the end of the night he ends up with a few in his crib.  He can put it in his mouth, he just can't find it. However, I like what you said about having one in the mouth and one in the hand. I will try that.
I believe that crawling is coming VERY soon. He is up and has even managed move slightly forward. I also think there are more teeth coming.
Thanks for your help.
