how often should a 4 month old poop?
« on: May 24, 2006, 12:01:04 pm »
my four month old is breastfed, and i started him out on solids (cereal) a couple of weeks ago (he loves it!) but i have noticed that his pooping has slowed down quite a bit, he used to poop at least 2 times a day, now he is going a couple of days without pooping. is this normal? he doesn't seem to be straining or in pain or anything, i just wanted to know what is normal.

thanks in advance.

Hi!

I believe it is totally normal for a baby's poops to slow down a bit as solids are introduced.  As for foods to 'make him go', there's a huge thread at the top of the Feeding Solid Food forum called "Laxative Foods" - my DS is severely constipated (screaming, rock hard poos, bleeding bum, etc) and I've had great success with prunes the last few days.  But I wouldn't worry too much if your baby's not straining, uncomfortable, etc.

[Thanks, i was actually reading that when you were replying. so as long as he seems to be in good spirits and is not in pain or anything then i should not worry? he is such a happy baby! sorry to hear about your lo.  This is my third baby, but this one has me worried all the time, i guess because there is 7 years between him and my next so, i had to start all over! i forgot how much worrying you do LOL

I was worried about the same thing.  My lo had gone a week without a BM.  My doctor wanted me to give her a suppository EVERY DAY that she didn't have a BM!!!  I didn't like this advice. Upon further research, I have learned that BF babies use most of the breast milk, so there is very little waste, so they do not need to go every day like they did when they first came home.  I have not been giving the suppositories and my lo has been having a BM, on average, every 4 days.

When you start solids, it's pretty normal for your LO to start pooping less. You know you've got an issue with constipation if your LO seems uncomfortable trying to poop or is straining, or if the poop looks like marbles when it does come out (sorry if TMI). If that happens, your best bet is to make sure your LO is getting lots of fluids and keep an eye on his diet. Iron fortified cereal is notoriously constipating, and pears and prunes can often help. Constipation can also be a sign that your LO's digestive system is too immature to handle solid foods just yet. HTH!

My lo once went over 2 weeks without going.. and I think it was right around the 4 month mark, my doc said not to worry unless the poops get hard or seem painful. And like the pp said, breastmilk is so digested that there is very little waste.
