wants to sleep on his tummy
« on: May 24, 2006, 20:14:01 pm »
We are working on getting rid of the wedge and the swaddle and DS is rolling all around. He keeps rolling to his tummy and burying his face in the mattress. I can hear his breathing muffled so I keep turning him over. I have tried turning his head and he doesn't understand. Should I let him fall asleep like this? I am afraid he cant breath as well.

PS. He has always liked the blankets over his face.

Hi!  We have been having the same problem with our little girl.  She's much too big for a positioner and to be swaddled.  Now that she can roll that's all she wants to do.  Us rolling her onto her back doesn't help because she'll just roll right back over.  This has been going on for about a month now and all we can do is monitor her to make sure she's o.k.  If your little guy wants to roll I'm not sure there's much you can do about it.  I read that the SIDS risk greatly decreases when a baby can roll over.  I read this in What To Expect The First Year by Heidi Murkoff.  Hopefully this will give you some peace of mind.

Natalie has slept on her tummy since Day One, with the only exceptions being a period of time when she was swaddled. I'm NOT a medical professional, but I'm assuming that at 8 months (if I read the ticker right?) he's got some good control over being able to lift and turn his head if he's on his tummy, which should hopefully put your mind at ease some.

You can always ask your pediatrician to be sure. :)

Savannah went on her tummy b/c she instantly slept better and longer that way and b/c she would turn her head side to side.  We started at six weeks.  HTH.

Liam also slept on his tummy from about 3 weeks.  I started out on his side, as he spit up all the time and ws scared he would choke, and then my mom babysat one night and put him on his tummy and he slept so well.  He was always able to lift his head and turn it arouund.
As long as he is rolling over, Im sure its fine.
About blankets on the face, ds loves to have a blanket up on his cheek as well,  now that he has a lovely, he always puts it on his face.  Its a comfort thing I think, I to always sleep with the blankets on my cheek.
Hth :)

Hi ladies. Thanks for your replies. I decided to go ahead and let Gage fall asleep as he wants, and he ended up sleeping on his tummy with his face turned. He ended up waking after only 30 min crying. He is sleeping right now on his tummy face down. I was going to move him, but do to your advice I wanted to see what he would do. I keep checking on him and he seems to breathing fine. He is going on a little over an hour of nap time ;D ;D ;D Maybe this is what the poor doll needed all along. :-[ I am still a little apprehensive though.

PS DOes anyone else's lo sleep face down?

Hi gage's mom

Since Mia was about 7months she has started sleeping either on her side or her tummy and now just recently she has started to sleep face down.  I don;t like it at all but it appears that's how she's most happiest.

My DD (8wks old) also likes her tummy better than her back.  It really scares me though.  I'm a nurse in the NICU and continually preach to parents to put their kids on their back when they get home.  The odd thing is, we almost always have our NICU babies on their bellys to sleep, but their continually on monitors.  I put DD on her tummy for her naps yesterday and she slept for 2 hours each ( and she's usually not a good napper).  Wasn't quite ready to put her on her belly through the night in the other room, but if it gets her sleeping better  I'm all for it.   One of my good friends who also has a 9 wk old. has been letting her DD sleep on her belly for about a month I think.  The crazy thing is, is if you look at all of our baby pictures WE were sleeping on our bellys and obviously lived to tell about it.

Well thanks to you ladies I have been letting Gage sleep on his tummy and he seems to prefer it. Poor bub, that is probably what he needed all along! :-[

Kayla is just like Gage. She loves being on her tummy, always loved having a blanket over her face. I sware sometimes I don't know how she breaths.
The last 2 nights when I go to check her before I go to bed she's been on her tummy, face in a blanket, bear under arm, and knees tucked under her so her butts up in the air  ;D LOL its so cute...
