Mac and Cheese
« on: May 25, 2006, 07:34:12 am »
My 2 and a half year old is going through a phase of only wanting macaroni and cheese for dinner, she used to love meat and veg and other diff types of food, but at the moment she only want's mac and cheese..... it is driving me and my dh a little nuts!!!

did anyone else have a lo go through this? what did you do to get them to eat other stuff for dinner??

at a bit of a loss.... someone suggersted giving it to her for breakfast lunch and dinner 1 day and then she probably wouldn't want it anymore...it's tempting :)

When Tyler does this, I still offer other foods but I don't make a big deal out of it when he insists on eating the same thing every day. It wears off. In the meantime, I do a lot of hiding stuff in the food he happens to be eating. When it was mac and cheese, I bought some jars of veggie puree and mixed them in, and he even liked some small chunks of veggies in there. When it was peanut butter sandwiches, I spread all kinds of other stuff on top of the peanut butter. In the long run, though, it does even out!

I agree with the PP

It does wear off even thou it feels like a life time.  Ciara went thru a phase of wanting tinned spaghetti all the time.  We didn't give in, but didn't cut it all out either.  You just have to ride the storm!

Lol... as you can tell I have no experience of toddlers and food.. just wanted to share how silly my brain is..

When I read the title to this thread I automatically assumed that I was going to read that someone wanted to feed a McDonalds Big Mac with Cheese to their LO and was about to go noooooooo lol...

Apologies for my assumption lol...

You have also made me fancy macaroni and cheese now...

Try steaming some cauliflower and then pureeing it and adding it to the cheese sauce before mixing it with the pasta. They can't see it and that way they're still getting veg, carbs and protein from the cheese.

Just a quick note.... I go through this with my dd she loves mac and cheese but there is a whole wheat mac and cheese out there that you can buy and it is a heck of a lot better for them then the Kraft stuff and it actually tastes really good!  It is just a wee bit more $ then the other but it's worth it!   Kari

Strangely enough, my DS1 loves Mac and Cheese but refuses to eat the Kraft Dinner kind....it has to be my homemade kind.  So I don't feel *quite* as guilty indulging him when he wants it more often than reasonable!

Oh it's very complicated.  I boil the noodles and layer them between layers of grated cheddar.  Then bake in oven for 30 or so minutes at 350 degrees.

Until very recently, I always made my own mac and cheese for Lilah, with the cream sauce, and whole wheat pasta.  It was only recently, after I got (pregnant and) lazy, that Lilah even tasted boxed Mac and Cheese (I bough the Amy's Organics kind).  And it was only then that she wanted Mac and Cheese daily.  What do they put in that stuff?  I'm considering making up a big batch of Mac and Cheese, freezing it in little containers, to be microwaved whenever she wants Mac and Cheese.  That way I don't fee so gulity about giving it to her.

Today she asked for Mac and Cheese for breakfast.  I had some in the fridge, so she got it. :-[  I'm trying not to impose my "food rules" on her; i.e., only "breakfast" food should be consumed at breakfast.  DH actually rarely eats breakfast food, unless it's the weekend and I cook something special; he usually eats whatever is leftover from dinner, be it rice and beans, curry, etc.  My stomach turns at the thought, but really, I'd rather promote eating a breakfast of any variety than limiting it to only "breakfast foods".
