Late Afternoon nap?
« on: May 25, 2006, 14:39:48 pm »
Currently my 4 1/2 mo dd does great with her naps at 9 and 1 (usually 1 1/2 to 2 hrs.) .  However when 5 PM rolls around she is cranky, I know she is tired.  I've tried to put her down for a nap but she screams.  we usually start our nighttime routine around 6 or 63o so I wouldn't want her to sleep too long.  Any suggstions on how to better cope with this hr (usually from 5-630).  Thanks!

What time does she wake in the morning? Can you post her current routine?

She may be getting too much sleep at her first two naps and therefore unable to get in anymore in the catnap. But at her age, you risk her getting overtired and having nightwakings without the catnap.

I'd suggest not letting her sleep more than 1.5 hours at the first time naps so she's tired enough for at least a 30 minute catnap. If that still doesn't work, you can limit one nap to 1.25 hours. Also, the catnap is considered a "freebie" so if she won't take it in her crib you can allow this one to be in a swing, stroller, car, etc as it's going to go away soon anyway.

It seems like with my first baby I tried for this nap at about 4:30... if she took it, GREAT, and bedtime was 7.  If she didn't take it (after 30 min of trying I gave up) we pushed bedtime back by 30 to 45 min.  This is tricky, I DO remember that!  Good luck! :)

That's what I do!  :)

The catnap? Most drop it between 6-9 months. Boys tend to drop it later than girls. I think we dropped it right about 7 months.

Thank You!  Could you remind me why not taking naps can lead to night wakeings

Because missed naps lead to an overtired baby and overtired babies often wake at night, unable to transition sleep cycles or to stay asleep in light phases.

I had very good experiences with the catnap. The night-time routine was lovelier and he slept better. It only worked if his afternoon nap wasn't too later or too long.
