Just curious what a 6month old who is starting cereal's schedule would look like.  Like how much cereal and when would it be given, morning, afternoon, evening, etc.  And do you only do cereal for a certain amount of time, like couple of weeks, then start adding some veggies?  I'm just curious and getting ready for that day to come and couldn't find any type of schedule like that in the BW books.

I did what Stacy said exactly. I wanted Ella's digestive system to get used to food in general, a mild food at that so I gave her just baby rice cereal for 2 weeks for breakfast starting at 18 weeks, then after the 2 weeks I started giving it morning and night but still just rice cereal. Then as I approached 5.5 months I started doing 4 day intervals of trying different veggies, then fruits next, now at 7 months yoghurt, finger foods, etc. Hope this helps! Sarah

Wow, that's awesome!  Thanks guys!  I was thinking you fed them RIGHT after giving them part of the bottle.  Thanks for the info!  I'll check the book out, could you tell me the author?

I did it slightly differently with my two girls - I fed the cereal after the 11am bf (on 4hr EASY, 7am, 11am, 3pm, 6.30pm, DF milk feeds).  I found that I had more time then (seemed like they went for their first nap quite quickly after wake up), but it was still enough time to tell whether there was going to be any reactions to the food before night time.  It could be straight after the milk feed initially, since they're not really 'eating' much, just tasting, so it doesn't matter that they might not be hungry.  Otherwise, try for an hour or so after the milk feed.  I added a second 'meal' around a week later ('breakfast'), and a third a week or two after that ('dinner' around 4pm ish). With dd1 this was because she wasn't getting the idea, and I thought she needed more practise.  With dd2 it was because she was enjoying the solids.  (They both started at 6mo).  I followed the 3 day rule, and after the rice cereal started with pureed veges like pumpkin, sweet potato etc.

When you fed the bottle did you let them drain the bottle or only give them so much so that they would take more at the solid feeding?

Hi Spectra!

I just wanted to share our routine/schedule with you.
We tried to offer Mateo solids 1 hour after BF, but he's too active and gets annoyed if he cut his A time short, or in two!

This is how we go about our days, give or take 15-30 minutes:
7:30 a.m.   Wake up, BF, change into "day" clothes
8:00 a.m.   Solid with 1 or 2 oz bottle (has never taken the bottle, but he will one day!)
8:15 a.m.   Play time
9:30 a.m.   start wind down
9:45 a.m    Sleep
11:30 a.m. BF
11:50 a.m. Solid with 1 or 2 oz bottle (has never taken the bottle, but he will one day!)
Noon        Play time
1:45 p.m.  Start wind down
2:00 p.m. Sleep
3:30 p.m  BF
4:00 p.m. Play time
6:15 p.m. Bath time
6:45 p.m. BF, Bed time (asleep by 7:30 latest)
11:00 p.m. DF

Mateo takes a bottle any other time, but he'll only take a sip or two after his "meal". It's probably coz he's full, but we'll keep it there, so that he knows he has fluids available to him while/after he eats.

I think it would be AWESOME if we could all follow Tracey's advice exactly as she laid it out for us, but we have to do what works for our own babies. Like I said, I tried to space out the BF and the solids, but it was a no-go. And I didn't want Mateo to "resent" his high chair, so this works better for us.

Oh, and Stacy is 100% right, you are just introducing solids for the next while, Milk/Formula is still LOs main source of nutrition.

Hope that Helps,
Nay

That's awesome, thanks Nay!  Yes I must keep in mind if she doesn't like to be fed solids at a certain time just try a different time.  I appreciate the schedule, helps me a lot when I start to plan feeding her.   :)

This is great information! I've been giving my Lo cereal for a week now and started with barley. (I was concered rice would be too constipating) I'm now trying oatmeal. Do I have to try wheat and mixed grain as well?

Stacy, I'm going to start some veggies after two weeks of just cereal as you mentioned. When I introduce a veggie in the morning do I also give some cereal during that same meal?

Thanks for your help!
