Hi

I have a couple of questions regarding allergies or food intolerance.

My lo is starting out on solids so far she has had rice cereal, oatmeal (allergic), sweet potatoes and then today we started on squash.
With oatmeal her symptoms were swollen tongue, watery eyes sneezing and coughing.  Today after squash (given at 11am) I noticed that she would not eat her 3pm bottle at all and then at 6 when I offered her a bottle again she just had 4 oz. Normally she would eat 7. She then had diarrhea (1x) only.

1.  Can I consider this a food intolerance?

2.  Is this normal that already she is having a reaction to 2 out of 4 foods introduced?

3.  Should I try the squash again tomorrow? or should i just stop it now?

4. If I do stop it or notice a reaction to another food when can I introduce another new food? For example: assuming that I stopped giving my lo squash today. Tomorrow what would I give her sweet potatoes (something she had no reaction to)? or should I try another new food. I know that it can take about 48 hours to get out of the system so should i just hold off for a couple of days.

Any suggestions would be a great help!

https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=50779.0  Some info to start with.  My thought would be to skip the squash for a few days, then try again.  She may just have a bit of a tummy bug.  Also, don't try anything new during that time.  The oatmeal sounds allergy, the squash I'm not sure about.  How old is she?

She is 5.5 months old. We started on cereal at 4.5 months per the Dr. Do you think these reactions coould be due to the fact that she started on solids at 4.5 months?

The squash, very possible.  The oatmeal, I would not want to try again until a doc ok'd it.   The tongue swelling is what makes me say that.  That sounds allergic to me.  What did the doc say about that?  A lot of babes can't handle solids at 4-5 months as the digestive system is not ready for it yet.  Does she have reflux, causing the rec to start cereal?  At this point, milk/formula is still all she really needs.  She might do better waiting a few weeks.    :)

Hi

Since I have already started with the rice cereal and she seems to be taking it well. Should I just stop or should I maybe only continue with that for now. She will be 6 months old on June 13th.

Stay with it and wait on the other stuff until at least then.  Then maybe start with pears.  Really easy to digest.  Solid feeding has more ideas about that sort of thing.

Agree with Jenn - the oatmeal reaction sounds like an actual allergy to me, the squash possibly an intolerance. I'd also stay stick with the rice cereal for now (if anything) and wait at least 2 weeks to try anything new. When you do, maybe try a very small amount of something like pears, apple or sweet potato in the morning. I'd suggest doing only 1/2 teaspoon the first morning, 1 teaspoon the second morning and then continue doubling for 5 days - after that you should know if it's a "safe" food.

Since I have been giving her solids for about 1 month now if I take it away will that be confusing to her or pose any problems at all? I will definitely stop the veggies, but not sure if I should give her the cereal or I should just wait till she is 6 months (about 2 weeks) and then start over from scratch. The Dr. mentioned since her reaction was severe to Oatmeal to not introduce it to her till she is at least 1 year.

Since she is ok with the rice, she should be fine continuing with it in small amounts.
