Last Attempt-Aluminium foil going on windows today
« on: May 28, 2006, 10:03:32 am »
Well wish us luck, the extra strenght aliminium foil is going up on dds windows this evening. We have pretty much got sleep and naps sorted but are stuck with an early wake up that is getting earlier every day, 12 days ago we were at 7.30 today was 6.15........and we are both tired. So tonight before dh heads off on yet another trip he has a little job to do.
Walk in walk out is not working and dd only has a 1.5 hour nap during the day with bed time of 7.20 pm. Dh wants me to put her later but I don't agree and don't think she will sleep longer. Is he right though? Will I need to move her bed time later to get a later wake up? At least until next year when she will probably drop her nap?

Hope I am making sense...bit tired but don't want to nap cos if I do she usually wakes up from hers earlier  :P

My lo is a bit younger than yours but I think the principles are the same - aluminium foil works wonders here. Also, I find that if he goes to bed later, he wakes up earlier (I know, makes no sense ::)). If he's not in bed by 7pm, he wakes up early - can you try this with your dd, see if it helps?

HTH :)

Caroline I only tried it 1 and she woke earlier, so I suppose I didn't really give it a fair go. To be honest dh thinks 7.20/7.30 is too early already as he sees very little of her, he didn't get home until quarter to 7 tonight. Anyway the foil is up, but the windows let in air at the sides and it's quite windy so of course now I am afraid the noise will waken her or frighten her....... plus she has never slept in a completely dark room during the day so don't know how she will react at naptime tomorrow.
I know I am stressing but we are going on vacation in 3 weeks with a time difference of 1 hour behind us so would really like to get back on track......... She did a 1hr50 min nap today and bed at 7.35 cos dh was doing her window so lets c how tomorrow goes, will give it 3 days and if it works will get more black out material.

I think the bedtime adjustment depends on reasons for early waking. If you think she is overtired because she has lost sleep over a period and is waking in the night etc or because of  short naps etc then a few days of early to bed should correct the probelm.

If she normally sleeps 11 hours at night (which seems quite good to me) with a reasonable nap, then you are right an early bedtime will just make her wake up earlier (in my experience anyway!)

Harrison is put to bed early say 7pm if he is recovering from a bug, or has got overtired, this gets him back on track. Once he is "sleeped up" then if I put him to bed early he will wake max 10.5hours later regardless as that is the most he ever sleeps, so then I gradually push bedtimes back over a couple of days. Having said that it is a juggle, as he is a predominantly early riser, so too late to bed and he will still wake at 6am, then we are back to square one.

You have my sympathy. Get an early night yourself - it is amazing how much less stressful everything then seems! They also often seem to get themselves sorted out regardless of what we do!

::)  We picked the windiest night of the year and air gets in at the side of the windows. All I could hear over the monitor was " crackle crackle crackle". Was so nervous she would wake and be scared, she woke about 15 minutes later but I went in straight away cos I just knew she was going to notice the noise  ::) and the tinfoil came down after all dhs' work.
Anyway I got blackout lining taped to the window so will see in a few days how it goes, today was a fluke really, she slept til 7.10 but she only did a 45 minute nap yesterday. I willl give it until Sunday to see if we have been sucessful or not  ;D Fingers crossed

how is everyone applying the foil?  just inside the frame with tape or something?  just curious...i have a blanket hanging up (yes, for a YEAR) under his drapes but it really attracts the sun and makes his room hot.  Maybe I'll just tape up white bristol board???

Well it's not working so far. Stacey she naps for about 1 hour 20 mins, it's getting less - 2 weeks ago it was 2 hours with a 12 hour night time. She was much better yesterday after an 11.5 hour night, today she was cranky in the am and really tired by lunch time of 11.30. In total now she is getting about 12.5 hours sleep in 24 which is not bad but she needs at least half an hour more if not an hour. Anyway obviously I can't force her to sleep so guess I will get used to the early starts, right????  ::)

When I put the tinfoil up I just used masking tape. Was aslo preparing hard craft paper but I covered it with brown adhesive roll paper on both sides and think it would have done the job as well.

What's with all our lo's getting less sleep around this age--the shortened naps and night sleep?
