Crackers
« on: May 28, 2006, 21:55:21 pm »
Our US Ped recommended introducing bread and "crackers" to DS after 8 months. What are crackers?

I know of Jacob's Cream Crackers, which are a hard, crunchy wafer that us Brits have with cheese.

I know of Ritz crackers, Wheat Thins and Triscuits etc. in the US.

Does she mean the latter? The ingredients list was as long as my arm, and contained all kind of icky stuff. I found some organic wheat thins that looked a little better, but they're so hard and crunchy, and DS would have to gum a long time to get them squelchy. Maybe this is the intention?

Any thoughts on crackers?  :)

TIA!

Katy

I would think the US doc is referring to the Ritz, Wheat Thins, Triscuits category when he meant crackers.   But, you are right, those crackers can have lots of sodium.  How about low-sodium soda crackers, or you can find low-sodium whole wheat crackers.  Gerber also makes veggie crackers that are great for beginners.  HTH   :)

I think Sheila's right...your ped probably meant Gerber or other baby crackers to start with. Other ones like those you listed (and Goldfish, another popular kids' cracker) can come later. If you go into the baby food aisle at your grocery store, you'll see that Gerber makes veggie crackers (great for beginners) and fruit and veggie puffs (also great for beginners), which are little puffy crackers shaped like stars that dissolve really easily.

Thanks for the f/b on the crackers. I was looking at the Gerber ones just yesterday, but found the long list of ingredients a little off-putting. Guess I'm going to have to get past the single fruits and veggies stage at some point  ;D
