Thank you goddess mothers everywhere!!!
« on: May 30, 2006, 13:16:56 pm »
After reading a few posts on sippy cups-i have been giving Madelaine a sippy cup since she was 6+ months old. She was just starting to get it and I read a few posts and heard information elsewhere about sippy cups causing speech delays in some children (at an older age obviously!). SHe was struggling to tilt her head back to get anything from it and it had to have enough in it for her to do that. That's hard for a little one bc it's heavy! So on Sunday I bought her a Sippy cup with a straw-she had NOOOO idea what to do with it. On Monday, I read that one of you mom's filled the straw and plugged the bottom, then put it in her mouth and when she made a sucking motion, you let go! VIOLA !!! WATER!!!! After 2 trys, dd had a mouthful of water and thought it was oh so fun! My little hoover.....

So thank you all and hear hear for sippy cups with straws!!!  ;D ;D

DS has never used a straw - how would I start?  Is it to late to introduce now?

Lola,

Did you buy any particular brand, or just an off the shelf one?

We could only find a really large one, and haven't really gotten into it, as DS is quite happy to drink from a bottle with a sports nipple on it -- for now!

Great! DD is using a straw cup beautifully now too! She first got the hang of the First Years Take n Toss one and now have her using a Playtex one since it has a flip top and doesn't spill as easily. We just kept offering and showing and it finally just clicked about a week ago.

Katy-I bought the Gerber flip straw one. It has a flap that closes over and seals off the straw for travel etc. It's a bit large, it goes wider at the base, but it works really well and has a very soft flexible straw. comes apart easily for cleaning too with two handles. I tried her just with a normal straw yesterday in a glass and she did just as well!! It was the only one there was in teh store! I think I will look for a smaller one when I go shopping next time!

Tom Tom's Mum- It's never too late but i don't know how old your lo is. M will be nine months tomorrow! Its funny though, I gve her teh sippy cup yesterday at work bc I forgot her straw sippy and she tried to suck it like it was a straw so obviously for her it is easier with the straw!!
