3 week old up every 1.5 hours
« on: May 31, 2006, 14:07:03 pm »
Hi ds is 3 weeks old and is on Xantac for reflux.  He seems to sleep pretty well during the day and is on a 3 hour EASY.  At night, however, he is up every 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.  I thought he should have a longer stretch by now.  He is bf although we are trying to introduce a bottle.
He starts his day at 7am, eats every 3 hours and sleeps for 1.5 to 2 hours in between feeds.  We have tried cluster feeding but he doesn't seem to eat well if I wake him for that.  He is in bed by 8 and then all hell breaks loose.  Usually he gets up within the hour, then he will only sleep for 45 minutes to 1.5 hours from there.  He is frantic and I usually feed him but he doesn't eat well before he is back asleep.  So, I know that we are in a vicious cycle.  NOthing else seems to calm him down though.  He is in his crib at night on an incline and I am putting him on his belly b/c of his reflux (I know that is bad).  but I am thinking of swaddling him again tonight and trying him on his back.
Any suggestions about what to do.  He won't take a pacifier.

Thanks, Kim

To me it sounds like you're asking a lot of a 2 week old ;)

For cluster feeding, you don't wake them up- the idea is that you let them feed various times in a short amount of time before bedtime so they can store up some extra milk and get a first long stretch. Don't wake him to eat, you'll just interrupt his sleep cycle.

Maybe you mean dream feed? That is when you feed him before he wakes up, but if you say he is up after 45 minutes you don't have time to do that, KWIM?
A diagnosis of reflux at 2 weeks is also unusual. Are you comfortable medicating?

I would definitely swaddle, that worked wonders for my DS.

Well, don't mean to be asking alot of him ;), I am just worried that he is not eating well and getting into a bad habit of snacking at this point.  According to Tracy, you should not feed them more then every 3 hours and they should have a 3 to 4 hour stretch in there.
I am trying the dream feed but it isn 't working and with the cluster feed, I was trying to wake  him up.  Based on her book, you should   wake them up to feed them at 5 and 7 or 6 and 8, but it didn't work for us.

My first ds had reflux and by the time it was diagnosed he was a mess!  I am comfortable with treating him based on having been through this before and the fact that my ped talked to a specialist about him.  Just hope it helps him.

Thanks, Kim
