Help with baby not eating enough anymore.
« on: May 31, 2006, 17:18:50 pm »
Well at about 2months she would start to fuss while I fed her, she would cry constantly afterwards, and was before drinking 5oz a bottle then it went down to about 2 or 3oz.  I posted here and was advised to move my bottle nipple to a faster level, which I did, and it worked beautifully.

Well now here we are at 4 months and she only eats 3oz, was eating 6oz, then she clamps her gums down on the nipple and pushes it out of her mouth along with a bunch of milk.  I've tried everything.  I've burped her, waited 5, 10, 15min before trying again, even put 4 extra holes in the nipple since they don't make them any faster. (I use Playtex Drop Ins, the nipples come in either slow or fast)  The difference from now to last time at 2months was that she is not fussing now, she just doesn't want to eat anymore.  She sleeps fine, she's not cranky/fussy, she doesn't get fussy while feeding her, like arching her back like she did at 2months, she just decides she doesn't want anymore.  I need help as I am so concerned she's not getting enough nutrition.

I am on a 4 hour routine.  This problem has been getting increasingly worse for the past 3 days.

Are you noticing any signs of teething - I have read that this can temporarily put them off their food...
Is she waking in the night for feeds instead, or sleeping OK?

I know where you are coming from, as I had this with my DS over the last few weeks, one really really hot day he would only take about 20oz total, half the normal amount. He's 23 weeks old today.

Well she's drooling a lot, she's getting a rash on her chin... She will bite anything that goes near her mouth...Never occured to me about teething,  I even tried feeding her through her sippy cup but it took her 10min to get through 1oz and she had enough.  For fun I fed the formula to her with a spoon and she was almost grabbing it out of my hand to eat it.  So weird. If it is teething... well perhaps I should check out the teething thread out.    For sleep she sleeps fine once she's asleep, been finding it harder to put her down for her naps though, she lies on her tummy and makes loud screaching noises as she tried to shove her fist, or the mattress, into her mouth.

Caspar had some dribble rash as well. I think he had a little teething episode yesterday, as he suddenly got grumpy, his left cheek when bright red, and he started shoving clothes/muslin etc into his mouth - he doesn't seem to grab hard things to chew, rather softer things to wedge in there.

I think they recommend teething gel on the gums 20 mins before a feed, or a homeopathic remedy/teething powder?

hi spectra
can't believe she's now sleeping better and now started teething ::). just thought I'd add that lots of babies go off their food/btls when teething.they don't like the feel of the teats against their gums (so had this with DD) s/times my dd would only take 24oz during the day and still sleep all night. once they get their teeth through their appetite comes back with avengance :o

How long does that take?  I feel bad for her that she is getting little over half of what she was eating beforehand.

We struggling with this again with my 7.5MO DD.  She used to eat 6-7 oz at each bottle including DF and an overnight feed.  Now we're lucky if she takes 4oz and she's cutting out one of her overnight feeds.  She's had her good feed periods and bad feed periods, but this is a bit extreme even for her.  And, she won't take solids so I can't try to make up the calories there.  Maybe it's teething...maybe it's just taking a while for her appetite to come back as she was sick 2 weeks ago...

Use vanilla extract :) It'll do exactly the same things as orijel but its safe to swallow and it tastes better. Worked like a charm for my DD.

it really varied with DD depending on how badly she was teething. i was woried about her intake (she got her 1st tooth at 18wks) so i spoke to my health visitor as this had gone on for a couple of weeks. she said as long as she is sleeping ok and when she is awake she is alert etc then not too worry too much. DD just got her first molars through and she didn't really eat properly for about 3 weeks b4 that :o.(we lso had to do a night feed cos she wasn't taking enough in the day)
teething takes weeks but takes three days for it to actually cut through the gum.
i would only worry about her intake if you think she is becoming dehydrated or is less alert than normal

Okay good, she seems fine, I had orajel yesterday, with that she ate her 6oz again, so that makes me happy.  I will try the vanilla extract though, safer to eat for sure.  I hope it isn't too much longer.  She keeps waking up now during her naps, never use to before.... probably why she seems so much more tired in the evening, like she is ready for bed 2 hours before bedtime... do you think I should let her go to sleep early?

as pp said depends on b/time. with DD i did give her the occasional early nite (say 30 mins earlier) if i thought she was getting overtired. some babies do sleep badly when teething hence why their so cranky ::) i think you shouls judge each day as it comes you should find that once her tooth has cut through her sleeping should return to normal. is she sleeping through the night or having a few night wakings
