7 month old hates spoon feeding
« on: May 31, 2006, 19:44:46 pm »
Hello,
I am looking for some advice on why is this happening to my son. he is 7 months old and now he wont open his mouth for the spoon. he is completely breast fed. and he used to love some solids.. but now meal time is such a challenge that I feel like pulling my hair out. Is it possible that he wants to eat by himself or is it something else. He has no teeth yet and I dont see any coming either. He plays with his sippy cup and doesnt want to learn to drink from it.
OR is it that he is bored from his regular foods, although i keep giving him variety.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks
Meenal

Something like this happened to me. Shay wouldn't let me feed him and it was just because he wanted to feed himself. Try giving him a spoon and load it up with whatever puree he has and help him guide it into his mouth. Or ginger biscuits are good for an every now and then as they disintergrate. I also found things that would 'melt' in the mouth like rice crispies or cheerios put onto the high chair tray often distracts them as they chase them round the tray and you can slip in some mouthfulls of food or small fingers of toast just go soggy. HTH

P.S. just thought could he be getting some teeth so his mouth may hurt and he doesn't want anything in there? Shay always stops eating when teeth are cutting.

Thanks for your suggestion. Its almost his feeding time and I will try to put some rice crispies on his table. I have given spoon in his hand but instead of putting it straight, he puts the back end of the spoon in his mouth and loves to choke.

I dont see any teeth coming out as of yet and he is not drooling or anything.. but will watch for the signs.

Thanks for prompt response.

The same thing happened to my daughter around the same time. She got sick of pureed foods in a real hurry, (well . . .wouldn't you ?) LOL. We just had to find ways to slowly add finger foods into her diet a little bit at at time and now she self-feeds herself finger foods only. It means having to give her fresh food and mashed up or cut up steamed veggies all the time which I find is much more work but probably healthier. I started with cheerios, and once she got used to it we slowly added new things with new textures. I also gave her some rice rusks as well to start b/c they basically melt in her mouth. I agree with pp, sometimes giving them some finger foods gives them an opportunity to get distracted so that you can get in a few mouthfuls of pureed, but that only worked for a little while until she caught on. My dd did the same thing with the spoon too, gagging herself, I just bought all soft rubber spoons so she could stick it in her mouth and gag on it without causing damage to her gums, she learnt not to gag herself eventually. She will take a small amount of rice cereal if I give her a spoon, but soon realizes taking it with her hands and sucking her fingers is much more efficient and the spoon ends up on the floor. Be prepared for a major mess each meal, the floor, the high chair and your lo, so I just lay garbage bag on the floor, take all of her clothes off except diaper and end up basically hosing off the high chair each time she eats. But you know what, it is so good for them to learn about textures and fine motor skills.  Sounds you like have an little independant one as well. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Thanks for your response.
Its getting really challenging by each meal :( And the fact that he is breastfed only, he ends up waking at night and feed at night when he skips solids during the day time. Last night he woke up 5 times and fed each time. I dont know what to do. I tried putting some baby carrots, fresh watermelon and some rice crispies on his table yday during the dinner time, he dint even try any of those. Is it possible that he is little constipated and thats why he doesnt care to eat much? Even during day time he is not taking breast milk properly. I would be satisfied even if either milk or solids are getting into him. He is under weight for his age too, but is too tall. Inspite of not eating well, his energy level never seems to go down, he is always playing and active and if lucky will take 2 naps(40mins each) during the day.

I know I am mixing up sleep questions and eating questions in this post... but I think its all related. I dont see any teeth coming out yet, not sure what else can be his problem.

Thanks for being there and listening(reading) to me. I needed some letout and this site is really good at it. Otherwise I will go insane.

thanks

Meenal,

Not much advice, but I wanted to add that my daughter went through this phase as well. She is 7.5 months old, breastfed and she also has NO sign of teeth yet. She went through a phase where she didn't want to take food off of her spoon. She has taken very well to a sippy straw cup. We began at about 4 months and she has water out of her cup daily. When she was going through the phase of not eating from the spoon, I actually put the bowl of food near her mouth and she acted like she wanted to drink the food. Crazy....yes. I put the bowl to her lips and began shoveling her pureed fruits/veggies and cereals into her little open mouth! Weird, i know, but it did work! She will still sometimes shy away from the spoon. Sometimes it has to do with what is in  the spoon and I think sometimes it is just the spoon itself. Just this morning she "drank" her strawberries/bannanas and oatmeal.  I figure that one day    she will eat from a spoon so I don't sweat it too much.
