I really don't know what is going on with my LO at the moment.  He is 9.5 months and has been a very good eater from day 1, but always an erratic sleeper due to silent reflux (thankfully that's over  :)).  Recently his naps have much improved but there is still no real consistency - I think this might be developmental though, having visited the birth club for similar age LOs.  Anyway, lately the eating has taken a bit of a nosedive.  He has gone from eating ANYTHING, to completely refusing some foods and then seems to be hungry when I am trying to get him to sleep.  Over the last few days he has refused finger foods and food from the spoon - initially I thought he just wanted to feed himself but last night he played angrily with his carrot and broccoli (he used to eat these and enjoy them) also home made potato wedges which I thought he would love !  I always know he will eat toast and fruit, so that is what I end up giving him, but he can't have toast all the time !  Yesterday lunch time he ate a good amount of pasta, the day before refused his chicken and veg which he has had loads of times but wolfed down risotto at tea time !  So it isn't a spoon/finger food issue but what is it?  This morning he wouldn't even try his cereal, wouldn't take the spoon at all so he didn't even know whether he liked it or not.  I assumed he wasn't hungry and took him down from chair with no complaint.  Half an hour later trying to get him to sleep and knowing he was tired, he just wouldn't settle and I definitely felt he was hungry so I gave him, guess what, toast ! followed by melon and yoghurt.  Tried to settle him for nap again as he was coming over to me and pulling himself up which usually means he is tired - but just wouldn't settle so I gave him his lunch time bottle and he guzzled 4ozs then started comfort sucking on the bottle so I took it away and he was out for the count!
Sorry if I am on the wrong board for this, does anyone know what is going on?  Should I post on nap board? I am sure the food issue will iron itself out in time, but I am so confused and throwing away so much food, then not getting clear signs from DS as to whether he wants something else or just isn't hungry.  I figure he must be hungry as he has always fed really well, both from breast and solids..... He has had a cold the last few days and is probably teething as well. Any advice greatly appreciated. :)

Honestly, a cold AND teething can really throw things off for several days, sometimes even a couple of weeks. That, on top of the huge developmental leaps that a 9.5 mo old is making, can make things go haywire. Take a deep breath and try to go with the flow...it isn't really clear if there's a nap issue, but I can address some of the food issues that are going on. Hopefully that will help put your mind at ease!

I don't mean to be cheeky, but is there a reason why he can't have toast and fruit if that's what he wants? He's still getting plenty of nutrition from breastmilk, so unless you run into constipation issues (always a hazard with bread), why not just go with the flow? It might help to start looking at his eating as if he's a young toddler (which he is now!). Try to look at his nutrition over several days instead of one day at a time, and you'll likely find that it all balances out. It's totally normal to only want to eat one or two things for days or weeks on end, and as long as they're healthy foods, there's no reason to fight it. I clearly remember Tyler going on the bread and cheerios diet around that age (in addition to the many, many food obsessions he's had since) and he survived, we just had to keep an eye out for constipation. And yes, something that was a favorite yesterday could bring on wails of protest today...welcome to the world of toddler eating!

I hope that helps put your mind at ease somewhat...it's totally normal, and your best bet is to go with it until it passes!

Thanks so much TylersMommy, that has put my mind at rest !  I guess I am too concerned about him getting a "balanced" diet, but looking at it over a few days period, or a week, that is what he is getting so it's not too bad.  I don't think you are being cheeky at all, thanks for your words of wisdom (you've been there!) - I will just let him at it.... :)

Justine we are going through the same thing at the moment. My DD has ALWAYS loved her food from day1 hasn't refused a thing. However over the last few months she has been on and off her food however in this time she got 4teeth,got her first cold and learnt to crawl, pull herself up and cruise. Then the last few days she has wolfed down all her meals and looked for more at some meals. It is a tough age i know we are also battling naps mainly her PM one i just wish things would settle down for a while.
Feel free to PM me of you want to chat about things further  ;)
