9mo eating hardly anything - when should i get worried?
« on: June 05, 2006, 12:57:37 pm »
Hi
My 9mo dd has never been a great eater. She didn't ever seem bothered about milk and I've had to take starting solids very slowly. However, over the past 10 days or so the little she used to have seems to have dropped off to practically nothing. Here's a typical day at the mo:
7am 6oz bottle - often leaves 1oz
8.15 Breakfast - one small piece of toast (she goes to nursery - she refuses all cereals but they've found she likes to feed herself toast)
11.30 Lunch - generally has about 3 teaspoons of savoury and can usually manage a whole petit filous or a third of a pot of fruit puree
2.45 6 oz bottle - mostly leaves 1-3 oz
5.45 Tea - i really struggle with this one. She often won't touch a thing.
7.00 9oz bottle - lately she's been leaving anything up to 4oz

Last time i had her weighed/measured (about a month ago) she was on the 50th centile for weight and off the scale height-wise, so she's already quite lean.

I'd like to be reassured that this is normal and a passing phase....anyone?

what about offering finger foods now. you said she like to feed herself toast could be a little bit of independence coming through!!. DD was the same at this age hers was usually teething affecting her appetite.

I have tried other finger foods but she's not really interested in anything but toast and rice cakes.
Don't know if teething is an issue. She hasn't got any teeth yet.

She's been dribbling and biting on things for about 5 months now!
She only started nursery four weeks ago and has been ill to some degree pretty much ever since, apparently that's pretty normal. But the last few days she's seemed a lot better/happier so i'm surprised that has coincided with her loss of appetite.

LOL.
could be just a phase. as i said dds appetite was very up and down. i would say if she seems healthy and alert it will probably pass. u could try and move that 2.45 btl earlier as it might be affecting her appetite at tea

I wouldn't start worrying just yet, especially since she's never been a big eater. If you start seeing weight loss or consistent night wakings that are clearly hunger, then something else might be going on. I agree that finger foods might be the way to go for the time being...the toast diet is pretty common, especially when teething. If she wants toast and rice cakes, why not let her have them and find ways to add variety? You can spread veggie or fruit puree on those or use egg yolk to make eggy bread/french toast. You can also break up crackers into smaller pieces and spread stuff on those too. When Tyler went on the toast diet, we found that he also would eat sandwiches cut into bits and squashed down slightly, and you can spread all kinds of things in there. And you can often get away with coating fruits and veggies in dry infant cereal or crushed cheerios to make them more "bready."

The only thing you have to keep an eye out for on the bread diet is constipation, which can usually be fixed with using prune puree as a spread. Keep offering other foods because you never know when she might try something new!
