what to give a nearly 6 month old to 'chew'
« on: June 05, 2006, 19:15:48 pm »
my dd has just cut her bottom 2 front teeth  :) trouble is she's not on solids yet! we planned to start this weekend

i wondered what i could give her food wise to help her ease the discomfort? i looked at teething biscuits but they all seem to be packed with sugar (& even salt!!). tried to find a recipe for sugar free biscuits but failed  :-\

should i just wait til she's established with her solid food before i offer her a carrot stick or a bread stick???

I would wait until she's well established on solids to give her any kind of food to chew on. The consistency of food for a beginning solids eater is almost liquid, so she'll probably gag on just about anything else at this point because she isn't used to the texture.

Tyler had 3 teeth by the time we started solids at 6 mo, so we just stuck with teething rings!

i give rose farleys sugar free rusks. she has a suck on them when we are eating, so she feels like she's joining in.  if she does manage to chew a chunk off (which she has once or twice) it melts in her mouth and she's fine with it.

obviuosly i wouldn't leave her unsupervised, and she doesn't actually manage to eat them, just makes a sticky mess, but it keeps her happy.

Bickiepegs are sugar free i think, and very hard to chew on.

there - no sugar.

they are rock hard and even I can't actually bite the end off one. they are quite thin which worried me to start with but they really are hard little biscuits, and rose loves to gum them for hours. they also have this hole in the end so you can tie them onto your LO's clothes, or round their wrist on a short ribbon (it's too short for a strangulation problem) and then you don't end up losing them all the time.

At TJ's The Kiddie Store near my home in BC, Canada, and I'm sure at other stores, they sell these self-feeding-handled-netted-bags.

oooh, hard to explain...

picture a rattle, but instead of a toy on the end, it's a netted bag.  You can put ice chips in it, frozen grapes, frozen food of any sort, chunks of watermelon, apple slices, oranges, etc.  It's so your LO can feed himself but can't choke on little bits and pieces.  If you haven't started solids, I'd get one of these and just fill it with ice chips, or maybe ice cubes made from very diluted juice so that he wants to gnaw on it.

Good Luck.  Tell me what solution works for you, if any, so I know what to do when I get to this point.

It's called the Sassy Teething Feeder.

There's the link.  I think it can be ordered online if it interests you.

You're welcome, Rosie's Mom.  I'm glad they have them in the UK too.  They look really handy!
