V. Bad Eczema - Sun Cream Recommendations Pls
« on: June 08, 2006, 14:44:44 pm »
Hello There

The weather here in the UK is finally getting quite hot so I need a sun cream for Aidan 17mths.  He has very bad eczema so I don't really like putting anything on him except his usual stuff.  Does anyone know of natural sun creams?  Or any that don't have added perfume and colour would be nice too.  Also, do they do ones that don't go on like white paint??

Thanks.

Ben also has terrible eczcema, we're currently covering him in hydrochortizone twice daily.  ::)  Last summer my HV advised me not to put any type of sun cream on him because it would irritate but to just keep him covered in loose cotton clothes.  We live near the coast and there no way we could stay away from the beach so I'm going to buy on of the all in one factor 40+ protection suits.  They have short legs and sleeves but will protect the most sensitive parts.  All i have to do next is find a way of keeping a hat on his head!!  ;D

I use Simple baby sun lotion, I get it from Boots. No fragrance.

The sun suits are a great idea too!

My lo (4.5 mo) has eczema too and I put the Nivea lotion that's for babies on him and he seems fine.  My stepgrandson (15 mo - yeah, it's a bit weird, my family setup) has the E45 one - he suffers eczema as well and my stepdaughter says it's really good.

Not offended, I'm 32!

I have three grown up stepchildren (in their twenties) who have kids of their own (four boys in total).  So....I'm a stepgrandmother (became one at the age of 27 when I got married to dh - ahahhahaahaa!!) and my own little boy is an uncle to four nephews who are all older than him (he's my husband's "wee late one" as they say where we come from) and so has two halfsisters and one halfbrother who think he's the bees' knees.

As you can probably guess, there's quite an age gap between dh and me, but hey, you marry a guy (or a girl these days in the UK!!!) not a birth certificate!!!!

Sorry to detract from the suncream issue!!!

I would suggest a sunscreen with titanium dioxide alone, so it doesn't have chemical absorbers.  Titanium dioxide is a physical blocker of rays on the skin. It has a whiteness to it, but IMO if you buy a good quality sunscreen it should be well designed so the whiteness isn't too noticeable.  Alternatively you could get a matt version, but be careful of staining on clothes.
If you want one without preservatives, make sure it doesn't contain alcohol which mightn't be nice on his skin either!

We've brought the Nivea Baby one.  It's great as it's quite runny so you don't really need to rub.  Aidan's skin feels quite moisturised after using it too which is a big plus!  I did try the toddler one but it had added perfume to it which the baby one doesn't.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

My ds hasn't reacted to the Aveeno spf 45 baby lotion....a bit difficult to rub in, though.

I have just recently found about AVENE products, which is for very sensitive skin. You can find it in all major Boots stores. Or on their websites. They have lotion 40 ideally for children and it's fragrance free.
They also have Eau Thermale water mist spray, which is very good for Eczema or if Baby gets a heat rash. You can also find quite a lot information on internet about their products.

I have been very pleased with it, hope you find good to.

My friend's DS had V bad excema as well...her told her to give ds a bath for exactly 20 minutes every night in plain, lukewarm, not hot water, then at the end, wash hair with baby shampoo, and body with Dove soap (the pain white or for sensitive skin bar) then rise well...and apply lotion (something for sensative skin) within 3 monites of hetting out of the bath. Also, don't scrub, or rub skin, just pat with the towel.

He started clearing up within weeks.

Gook luck.
