how much cheese is too much cheese!!!!!!!!!!
« on: June 08, 2006, 19:47:41 pm »
My daughter is 18 months old and she just adores cheese mmmmmm......  However she would definately eat 1/2 block of cheese a day if you allowed her too.  I have been told by some people not to give it to her as it couldn't be good and other people say its better than giving her sweets.  Can someone please tell if too much cheese is a bad thing or is there such thing as too much cheese

Really don't know whether I'm doing right or wrong!!

Your opinions please...

Hey there is no such thing as too much cheese! Surely! At least not for my 2 year old and I...

Just kidding, and I'm sure you'll get some proper nutrional advice, but I reckon so long as DS (and I) get a variety of other foods too, we'll be fine.

The only reason I know of to limit cheese is to ensure a balanced diet. Iron deficiency is all too common in toddlers because calcium can inhibit the body's ability to absorb iron, and many cheese and milk loving toddlers consume more than the recommended amounts of those foods. Here's an article with some info:  http://www.wholesometoddlerfood.com/toddlercalcium.htm
Oh, and the other thing to watch out for is constipation...too much dairy can cause some issues with that.

Our pediatrician told us not to worry about the fat in cheese. Yay!  We try to give DD more cheese & yogurt since she seems to dislike drinking milk more and more these days. :(  Hopefully that'll change someday, and she'll become the avid milk drinker like her dad...

My dd is about 19 months and also loves cheese. She will get down from having breakfast at 7:00 and by 8:00 she starts asking for cheese. I mix it up. I don't always give her the same kind - so she'll eat about 5 different types of cheese every day. I will say that All Bran (not too much) and grapes help to off set the constipation. She's also potty trained and 98% of the time will go poopy on the potty - so we are lucky in that sense and haven't had the same issues as my older dd.

I think their bodies need that kind of fat and calcium esp when going through a growth spurt. I also watched a Food Network episode that showed how they make string cheese and cottage cheese and they are processed in vinegar. Vinegar is great for digestion. Our bodies crave what our bodies need. I say let them eat as much as makes them happy so long as you are balancing the remainder of the diet. She is also teething (#16 due anyday) and the cold chewable surface feels great I'm sure. I also space it out...one stick every 3 hours or whatever works.
