Started refusing his mid morning milk
« on: June 08, 2006, 21:26:14 pm »
Hello
I have two weaning issues. My little boy is having a rough time going through teething at the moment. However, he has just started nursery two days a week and whilst there is refusing his mid morning bottle. He takes his normal BF when with me though. This is menaing he has only 4 feeds a day and has been waking at night (hungry, teething and also constipated!) He has been weaning since 1st May and is 6 1/2 months old.

1. Why is he refusing his bottle in the morning (he takes one with Dad at bedtime)
2. Whatever veggies I try, he'll only take a few teaspoons yet if I try fruit, he'll take loads more. I notice that at nursery he is only taking a few teaspoons of veggie and then up to 6oz of fruit puree! What can i do to get him off so muc fruit? Should i ask nusery to stop giving so much fruit? I worry that as a vegetarian, he should be eating more veggies.

His morning schedlue at nursery:

7.30 wake & bf (sleeps later so he isn't shattered when we leave at 8.30am)
8.50 arrives at nursery, and they give him breakfast
9.30 nap for 1 hour
11am - should have bottle (he is refusing this one and won't take it even one hour later)
12:30  - pick him up, feed him at 1.30pm at home

Normally:
6.30 wake, BF
8-9 nap
9.30 breakfast
10am BF
11-12 nap
1pm - try lunch (usually only takes a few teaspoons)
2pmBF
2.30-3.30 nap
5-6 nap
6 BF
bedtime routne starts at 7pm, last bottle at 7.30pm and bed for before 8

Any ideas anyone?
Thanks

Maybe he isn't hungry for that mid morning bottle? 6 oz of solids might be too much for him, at least for that meal. Have you tried cutting back on his solids? Do you give him the same amount of solids at that meal as the nursery does? He might be having a hard time adjusting to new people giving him a bottle...if that's the case, then it will sort itself out over time. Cutting back on solids to make him hungrier might help him pay a little less attention to who's holding the bottle, too!

As for the veggies, it may sound disgusting, but you might try mixing them with fruit or cereal if he likes that. To be honest, though, I wouldn't worry about it. His main source of nutrition should still be breastmilk and/or formula, and even babies who love veggies can end up despising them as toddlers. My DS was a vegetarian until he was 2 and that's exactly what he did!

It's pretty normal for things to go a little wacky when starting something new like nursery...hopefully things will settle down soon!

Thanks Melissa - the amount of solids at nursery may be affecting his desire for milk.

I was shocked at the amount of fruit they are giving him: even when I said he was up the night before crying with constipation. When he is home now, he only has 1-2 icecubes of anything. I wil give him breakfast at home, earlier in the morning and hopefully he should be hungry for his bottle..

The last two nights he hardly took any bedtime milk, so whichever way, he looks like he is only taking 4 feeds: yet the last two nights he woke in the night! Goodness knows what's going on..he was such a predictable little boy. But I suppose this age is full of so many milestones that routine is bound to change.
