How to plump up my baby!?
« on: June 08, 2006, 21:36:12 pm »
My lo is 8 mo old & has always been a little guy (he's about 17 lb now)...he's good at eating solids but I'm just looking for some ideas of foods to fatten him up a little! I'm sick of the "was he a preemie" questions...thanks!

+Hi Brandi!!

He's healthy anyway right??  Despite being small??  Nothing wrong with being small.  Is he a good eater??  MY lo is pretty small too but she's never been sick and very healthy!!  She's also a very good eater!!  Those peeps who ask if your lo is a preemie should shut their mouths!!
Blessed beyond measure.

Hey Jacksonsmom77, my son is also on the small size. But you know what the pediatrician was delighted he wasn't a chuncky baby. He said it was nice to see a lean, little boy because most of the ones he sees are too fat. Those were his exact words and I must admit it shocked me a little at first. I worried about it though, just like you are right now. But if he's gaining weight and the doctor says he's ok, I really wouldn't worry about trying to fatten him up a little. It's just my opinion though. Ask your doctor about what foods would be best and voice your concerns about his weight. They should be able to help.

Hey Brandi,

Was your lo bf??  BF babies are naturally skinner than bottle feed.  If he's taking solids well & he eats till he's full & happy, theres no need to worry.

Thank you! All your comments made me feel so much better.  I just happened to have 3 comments in 3 days about his weight from other moms who had kids around the same age & I started thinking...what is going on? But...I actually talked to my mother in law & she showed me pics of my lo's dad when he was the same age...their bodies looked the exact same, like little string beans...tall & lean (sooo not like his mom, lucky kid :)- so, I'm going to try & remember that...he is a pretty healthy little guy & very happy, these days at least! So I guess thats all that matters!

Thanks for making me feel better!

There's nothing wrong with tall and lean if you and your doctor are happy! You can maximize his fat intake, though, by making sure he's getting the proper amounts of breastmilk and/or formula. Those both have a far higher fat content than any solid food. As far as solids go, avocado, egg yolk, and cheese come to mind as healthy high fat foods.

My dd just hit 13 pounds and is 6 months 3 weeks (and no, she wasn't a preemie ;)), people have mistaken her for much younger and sometimes I don't even bother correcting them if they're strangers that have just walked up.

Until solids replace meals they don't amount to a great deal of calories, the local bfing clinic told me to offer avocado and banana- both higher in calories and nutrients. I find their appetites will be the ultimate factor on weight gain. My dd has started solids and has started a nw at 4am, I was feeding in the night, hoping to get some extra cals in her and it didn't make a difference in her last weight check (though I continue to night feed). But as the pp said, the breast milk or formula is the most important intake for them at this age.

I remember three days in a row when people made comments about Scotty's weight. He is 23 pound, nearly 9 months and looks very chubby. The question: "Is that still alright?" gets on my nerves. People should think about what they say...

dd is 8 months next week and is just under 16 lbs.  I always here "oh, my she is almost 8 months, what a small baby!".  It used to irritate me and still does sometimes, but if she was 8 months and on the chubby side, then people would comment about that as well.  As long as ped is ok then I wouldn't worry about it.

dd has always been a small eater, with her formula and with her solids.  I used to get really worried when I would look at all the feeding schedules on this site for other lo's her age and see how much they were eating!!!  But, she is gaining weight and I can't force feed her so all is well.

Just wanted you to know you are not alone.

she is a good eater and I don't worry at all! Enjoy your beautiful healthy baby!
