9 month old taking 30 min naps!!!!
« on: June 08, 2006, 23:49:23 pm »
I thought we crossed this hurdle!!!  My ds used to be a wonderful napper--a 2-2 1/2 hour nap in the a.m. and a 1 1/2 -2 hour nap in the p.m.  About a month ago he started with the 30 minute naps...having been there before with my dd, I tried to increase the A time.  It only made him overtired and the 30 minute naps persisted.  I've also tried the wake to sleep method...he only gets more excited and wakes.

He now takes two 30-minute naps/day and is exhausted by bedtime.  Sometimes I can sneak in a third 30 minute nap, but frankly, it doesn't seem to help.  He is not getting any restorative sleep during the day.  He is DEFINITELY tired before and after the naps...very cranky all day.  I am giving him a paci during awake time just to keep him calm...accidental parenting at its best!

The 30 minute naps seems to be his way now.  We recently took a long car trip and he took FOUR 30 minute naps in the car!!  Not once did he sleep longer than 30 minutes.

What do I do???

We are having similar problems at the moment with my DD's PM nap.
Could you post your routine so we can see when you are putting him down.

I did wake to sleep when he was having 45 min naps at around 4 months and I followed the method as described in one of the posts on this forum.

Currently, I sneak quietly into his room about 5 minutes before he startles awake and put my hands on him (usually on his back b/c now he rolls to stomach to sleep).  When he startles, his whole body jerks and wakes him up.  I gently hold him in place and sshh him.  If he sees me (I do not make eye contact) he starts to get excited (legs kicking, rolling over etc.).  Then he starts to babble, laugh grabat my hands and basically start playing immediately.  At this point he is pretty much up.  If he IS on his stomach, his head is usually turned away from me and I can usually extend the nap by about 15 minutes with him fussing a bit.  Even so, he'll still roll over look at me and wake up.

His schedule is still dependent on wake-up time, which varies.  Anywhere between 6:30 and 8:00 a.m.  I put him to bed at the same time every night and have used the same routine since he was 4 weeks old (for both bedtime and naptime), so I do not know why he wakes at different times.  I tried waking him at 7 every day, but in doing so, I often deprive him of that extra hour of sleep (if he would have slept to 8:00).  Anyway.  Here is his schedule:

7:00-wake and bf
8:00-breakfast
10:00-10:30--nap
11:00-bf
12:00 - lunch
2:00-bf
2:30-3:00-nap
5:00-dinner
6:30--bath, pjs, books, bf
7:30--sleep

He usually wakes at 8:00 and shh/pat gets him back to sleep.

He also wakes again between 4:00-5:00 a.m. to eat.  My pediatrician says it's ok since he was a preemie and could still need one night feed.

Finally, my son is a VERY high energy baby--always moving, even in his sleep.  Tracy would say he is 50% spirited/50% angel.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Rachel-

Has this been going on for a while for your lo?  Or is it a recent development?

Are you in Philly by any chance?  We moved from there last year and miss it terribly!   ::)

We're going on about 2 weeks of this.  Monday I got 1.5 hr pm nap, yesterday 1 hr pm nap, today 1 hr pm nap... but all other days/times for the past 2 weeks or so have been 30 minute naps  :-\  A little crazy, especially with another one (I see you have an older one as well).

I am in Downingtown, about 20 minutes west of Philly.  Where did you move?

We moved from Mt. Airy (in the city) to suburban Connecticut.  Quite a difference!!  We are not native Philadelphians, but lived there 7 years and consider it our home town.  Downington is lovely!!  I have relatives that live there!!

Anway, of course I did the wake-to-sleep this afternoon and it worked for the first time in weeks!  My ds is actually still asleep (for 1 hour 10 minutes so far).  I didn't even really need to go in there today, he seemed to be able to sleep through the body jolt at 30 minutes.  I hope this is a sign of good things!

I have decided to focus on the afternoon nap since my 2 year old is sleeping at that time and I can try to wake to sleep without interuptions.  I am also tweaking his schedule/routine a bit.  I found this website saveoursleep.com.au (I am sure a rival of Tracy's) who publishes routines for specific ages.  I would post the one for 9-12 months, but you have to pay for it and I am sure that I would be infringing on some kind of copyright laws...anyway, check it out, as you may be able to gleen some insight.

I am really excited to see what our friends on this website have in their bag of tricks!!  I always get useful info (like the wake to sleep) here and everyone is so nice.  Keep me posted!

Well, I was just going to put him down for the a.m. nap and hope for the best (no shhh/pat or wake to sleep).  I anticipate only getting 30 minutes in the a.m.

While dh is home this weekend, I'm going to do wake to sleep for both a.m. and p.m.  Hopefully by Monday the a.m. nap will be longer than 30 minutes!!

What did you think of his routine?  Any other thoughts that may help?  I appreciate your advice!

Will someone please tell me that this 30 minute napping thing is going to eventually end?  He used to take such long restorative naps.  Now he is cranky all of the time and I am powerless to do anything about it!!

I have tried w2s for over two weeks and it has worked ONE time only.  Yesterday, I decided to let him cry a little to see if he'd return to sleep.  The cry escalated within 3 minutes to all out screaming!  So, I ran up and got him.  I have also tried stretching the A time--I have actually gotten to 4.5 hours!!!  He is so tired at that point, he is literally falling asleep on the changing table (I change him right before nap time) and still only 30 minutes!!

I am actually getting really depressed about this problem.  Today I just said forget it, let's just go to the playground and if he naps he naps.  It helped my psyche a bit--but he was very cranky when we got home.

Help anyone!!

OK, have I been doing w2s wrong?  I just read one of the stickys on w2s and it discussed gently touching the child 10 minutes before wake up time to stir them....I have been trying to sshhh/pat my son back to sleep!!!  Have any of you ladies tried this?

W2s has worked for us and i am currently using it to extend DD PM nap with great success for the past 2 days. She has done 1.15hrs in the PM much better than 45mins. I also used it when DD transitioned from 3-2naps for her PM nap. What i do is go in 25mins after DD has fallen asleep and usually move her teddie or her arm until she moves and slightly opens her eyes.

I've tried w2s (the way where you actually stir the baby) for both a.m. and p.m. nap today and got 2- 20 minute naps instead of 30 minutes.  My son is exhausted, as am I.  Please someone tell me this is going to get better.

i'm in the same boat :(. I think after reading this tho, i may give w2s a go. I did try it before but she is like mommy and a very light sleeper. once she wakes, she tends to really WAKE. but i think i will try again. i would like to follow the post adn see what happens to your lo. i think there is always hope if there is consistency. hang in there and i would be willing to bet it will get better!
Hugs to you..i know how you feel! ;D

Allright, after almost 2 weeks of w2s my son started to take 20 minute naps (the time I would sneak into his room to do w2s),  I got so frustrated that I just decided that if he only naps 30 minutes then so be it.  It has been about 6 weeks since my son had more than 1 decent nap/week...I decided to give him 3 30 minute naps and call it a schedule/routine.

So, day 1, dh was home and I didn't get him to sleep at the regular time...his A time was 3 hours 15 minutes.  HE SLEPT FOR 1 HOUR 40 MINUTES!!!  So, I stretched the awake time for the afternoon nap to 4 hours--HE SLEPT FOR AN HOUR!!!  I couldn't believe it!

So for the last few days, I have been trying to stretch his awake time...it is tough.  My ds starts eye rubbing literally an hour after he wakes up and is what I would call over-tired by the time he goes to sleep, but it appears to work most days--at least in the morning.  Afternoons have been touch/go with mostly 45 minute naps, which I am actually somewhat happy about since that is a 50% improvement over the 30 minute nap.  It's not great, but it is better...baby steps.

Also, my son has eczema and I have been taking him to an MD who is also a holistic doctor.  She says that he may not be getting enough Calcium and Magnesium, which could be causing the nap waking issues, afterall he does know how to put himself to sleep and he used to take really long naps.  I'll keep you posted...

How are you doing?
