6 3/4 Months Teething & Not Nursing Well???
« on: June 09, 2006, 07:05:43 am »
My LO is almost 7 months old and she has not been nursing well. It started a few weeks ago, I could get her feedings in but they were a struggle and I'd have to give her a bottle of expressed milk at the end of the day at bed time to make sure she was getting enough to avoid a night waking. She did have a groth spurt at 6.5 months and woke up two nights in a row at different times to eat and she ate a lot! But now it seems she is cuttingher first tooth and she has cried a couple of times today while trying to nurse. I gave her some numbing gel to help her nurse and not feel the pain, but does anyone have any advice? How long should I expect this to last? My poor baby I can tell she's hungry but is so uncomfotable to suck, any advice would be helpful :)
Thanks,
 Sarah

Hi Sarah,
I do hope your dd is feeling better.

Check out this link and see if it helps at all

http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/teething.html

It actually says "Avoid using Orajel/benzocaine (or other topical anesthetics) directly prior to breastfeeding, as it numbs baby's mouth and can make breastfeeding very difficult for baby."

OOPSSS!!! Well it helped with her, but I was afraid that it wouldn't be the best solution!  Thank you for the link to the website, I have tried the frozen corner of a wash cloth, but not before nursing, and there are other helpful tips on that website, thank you so much!  I love this website all the moms are so helpful and makes me feel like I'm not alone going through all these wonderful milestones and developments. :)
Wish me luck on this latest challenge!

Aloha, Sarah

HI there.

I had heard that it hurts to suck when they are teething.  CHeck out my DD's age below and now read this - she has ALL 8 TEETH - 4 top and 4 bottom.   She has cut THREE at once - the last three.   She DEFINITLY does not eat well when this is going on!   I have used Hylands Teething Tablets and LOVE them.  They are homeopathic and dissolve instantly.  Her pain seems to magically subside, she eats and wards off those "I normally don't cry - but my teeth hurt" cries.

What about Tylenol and start the feed about 10 mins later so feed is comfortable.  I can't give tylenol after a feed - she always seems to barf it  up!!!

advice, be patient it passes.    DD ate so little today - THREE DARN TEETH!!!!  I can see all three are through - ugh
