Finger Food Help
« on: June 10, 2006, 20:31:57 pm »
So it seems Marisa (10 months tomorrow!) will only eat "dry" finger foods. She does REALLY well with Puffs, Cheerios, graham crackers, arrowroot cookies, etc. She'll also eat wheat bread (toasted or not) and chicken nuggets, although she'll only take a few pieces of that whereas the crackers, etc she'd eat a ton of.

But she won't even touch anything soft of wet - no pasta, cooked veggies, fruits, etc. I've tried soft cooked pasta in different shapes, steamed carrots, steamed green beans, fruit cubes, etc - she gets freaked out and upset and won't touch it and won't let me give it to her either. Any ideas? Just keep putting some on her plate and see if she'll eventually try?

Her meals are still mostly purees but she's starting to want to self feed more and more so I'm trying to stay ahead of the game and find healthy finger foods for her. She does like these veggie chips from whole foods but they are too hard for her to chew still - with her first two teeth still only halfway through.
Karen: Proud Mama to Marisa (8-11-05) and Matthew (6-5-09) and happily married to my best friend and love of my life since 10-13-01

Have you tried coating things like fruit in crushed up Cheerios of infant cereal? That might help her pick it up and it doesn't feel as slimy.

Sounds like she really prefers the crunchy foods. Could you try cooking the pasta/veggies etc. al dente so that it's a bit more chewy/crunchy. Then eventually, you could start to cook it more and more and get her used to the softer/wet foods.

I don't have any great advice except to say just keep offering it and she'll eventually try it. Try not to make it an issue by forcing it (not that you are) as that can make it worse and will stress her (and you!) out.

Good luck! I know it can be frustrating because you just want your lo to eat well!

I never had that problem with DD so don't really know what to tell you. However lately, I've been cooking her cubed carrots, zucchini, squash, etc a little less, so they come out not as soft/mushy. But they're not so terribly hard that she can't "chew" them in her mouth. You might try cooking her veggies a little less so that they're not so soft/mushy, and maybe she'll like eating them more?
