OUCH!! One thing I learned... just because you make the suction harder doesn't mean more milk is going to come out :) Try it low at first and wait until you let down - then you can turn it up a little....try thinking of the baby. What helped me is just leaning back closing my eyes, and taking deep breaths to MAKE myself try and relax  :)

another thought/question.. what about late at night (after lo is asleep for the night)? i am afraid of pumping first thing bc i feel like lo has gone all night and is going to be really hungry... is there really enough for them too? the other day i pumped after 1st feed on the breast that lo didn't eat on, and it was 99% foremilk.. i was bummed bc i thought it would be a full mix bottle.. any thoughts? ditto on peike's questions..
I usually pump every night right before the dream feed (she won't take the breast for the dream feed- too sleepy!) and then freeze or refridge anything leftover.   The milk supply was at first pretty low- just a couple of ounces, but after a month of pumping, I can easily get 4-7 oz! And- if I don't pump before bed, I wake up so engorged! - but when this happens, I feed her in the morning, and wait approx an hour, and pump out a bunch- or I'll wake 3 hours before her first feed and pump out 2 oz from each side (there's still plenty left over)- so when she wakes, she still has a full feed. I find though, that when I pump in the morning, I have a hard time catching up for the whole day...she'll tug after she's fed for a while, like she's trying to get more out, and I offer the second, and she empties that one too-  When I pump at night, I have the whole night to replenish the supply and I also sleep a whole lot more comfortably! And your breasts will certainly follow whatever you choose- morning or night.  I just chose night, and they certainly followed!

i have the avent isis iq duo. i would probably invest in some sort of electric pump. it's just so much faster and stronger- oh and at first, my nipples were ridulously sore after every pump. they were purple no matter what setting I had it on. But as I continued, it got easier and easier, and now, they don't hurt at all and I can have it on as high as the pump will go!- and yes, there is a second let down for the hindmilk- I can't always get it, but if I am so relaxed, it usually happens.

Averys Mommy,
What kind of pump do you use?  I can't remember what you said.  You only get 1/4 ounce after the morning feeding??  Just wondering how many times during the night does Lo feed...if any?  That will effect how much you have in the morning.  Also, the type of pump may be why you get less output.  If your lo doesn't feed during the night, then it would mean you may have more in the morning.  If she feeds 2 or three times, you maybe won't have extra.  I don't know....just thinking out loud.

I tried pumping in the morning as well and could only get 0.5-1 oz (maybe).  When I was doing this, dd was sleeping through the night with no feeds... so that isn't necessarily the case.

Proud to have breastfed for a combined total of 35 months

I just want to go back and clarify what I had written about pumping in the morning!  Carter started sleeping 10 hours a night at 6 weeks of age so in the morning I would be very engorged and he would really have to work to not choke because of the fast/powerful let down.  I also wasn't having much success pumping at any other time of the day because after a feed I was empty and it is hard to find time anyway.  I starter getting up about 20 mins before Carter would usually wake (about 7:30am) and I would pump both breasts.  When Carter was single side feeding I would pump one breast for about 3 oz and then the other breast for 1-1.5 oz.  When he woke he would feed on the breast that I had pumped less out of.  After awhile (maybe 4-5 months) I started pumping 2-3oz out of each and then he would feed from both sides when he woke.  It wasn't until 6 months that he started double side feeding at every feed (I had a big baby that was a big eater ... and still is  :))

I think it is important to find the best time for you to pump.  I needed to be completely relaxed in order to pump any sort of significant amount and that meant having DH around so that if Carter was crying he could tend to him.  There was nothing that stressed me out more than having my baby cry ... It will probably take some trial and error but pumping is something that is different for everyone.

Feel free to ask if you have any more questions/concerns!  :)

Oh ya .. a good pump is VERY important!  I had the Medela mini electric and I ended up killing the motor because of my fast let down clogging it up!  I then had to use the hand pump which really gets your biceps in shape (especially if you pump on a regular basis).  I did love my Medela pump and the customer service was helpful when I had to send it in for repairs.  A friend of mine had one called Ameda Purely Yours that she swears by ... and she was a big time pumper (like 8 oz a day!!  :o)
